Responsible for providing technical leadership and strategic direction for structural engineering projects, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and compliant design solutions. The role oversees the planning, design, review, and coordination of structural works across all project stages, while mentoring engineers, managing resources, and engaging with clients and stakeholders. The Lead, Structural Engineer plays a key role in upholding engineering excellence, optimizing project outcomes, and supporting the company’s business growth through technical expertise and professional leadership.
Responsibilities
- Provide overall technical leadership and accountability for structural and bridge engineering works: Lead and govern all structural engineering activities across project lifecycles (from investigation and conceptual design to detailed design, construction support, and audit reviews) to ensure structural integrity, safety, compliance, and fitness for purpose.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, codes, and engineering standards: Oversee and enforce adherence to applicable regulations, authority requirements, and recognised design standards (e.g. Eurocodes, British Standards) to mitigate technical, safety, and regulatory risks.
- Review, approve, and endorse key engineering deliverables: Critically review and approve designs, calculations, drawings, and technical submissions to ensure accuracy, constructability, risk mitigation, and alignment with project and client requirements.
- Lead and manage the delivery of structural engineering projects: Ensure project deliverables are achieved within agreed scope, quality standards, timelines, and budget through effective planning, coordination, and technical decision‑making.
- Plan and optimise engineering resources: Ensure adequate and efficient manpower deployment by conducting resource planning, optimising workload distribution, and balancing technical capability with project demands to maximise productivity and delivery efficiency.
- Coordinate with consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders: Lead technical coordination, resolve design and construction challenges, and provide timely engineering solutions to maintain project momentum and minimise delivery risks.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the Structures team: Provide coaching, technical guidance, and performance feedback to engineers to strengthen technical capability, improve design quality, and build a sustainable talent pipeline.
- Foster a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement: Drive improvements in engineering processes, methodologies, tools, and systems to enhance efficiency, consistency, and quality, while promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Establish and maintain strong client relationships: Provide trusted technical advice during project discussions, manage client expectations, and ensure satisfaction through responsive, high‑quality structural engineering solutions.
- Prepare and present technical reports and recommendations: Develop clear, concise, and professional technical reports, submissions, and presentations to support decision‑making by clients, authorities, and internal stakeholders.
- Support business development and strategic initiatives: Contribute technical input to proposals, tenders, and business strategies, and identify new opportunities through professional networks to support the company’s growth objectives.
- Drive innovation and value engineering solutions: Champion innovative, cost‑effective, and sustainable structural engineering solutions that optimise resources, improve constructability, and enhance overall project value.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of 15 years’ relevant experience in structural and bridge design.
- Registered Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
- Strong expertise in structural and bridge design in accordance with Eurocodes, British Standards, and related design codes.
- Proficient in engineering design software such as AutoCAD, STAAD.Pro, and/or MIDAS Civil.
