Technical Lead – FinTech / Brokerage / Payments

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Technical Lead to lead architecture, engineering management and technology delivery for a financial technology platform.

The ideal candidate combines strong financial-domain technology experience with proven engineering leadership, system architecture and delivery management capabilities. Candidates from either securities brokerage and stock trading platforms or cross-border payment businesses are encouraged to apply.

Professional Mandarin Chinese proficiency is required for day-to-day communication with Chinese-speaking stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Own technical architecture, system design and technology roadmap for financial technology platforms.
• Drive architecture decisions to ensure scalability, high availability, performance, security and maintainability.
• Establish technical standards and guide the evolution of backend systems and microservices.

2. Engineering Team Leadership

• Lead and develop a team of 10-30 engineering professionals, covering team structure, recruitment, performance management and capability development.
• Set engineering priorities, allocate resources and manage delivery commitments across projects.
• Build a strong engineering culture through code quality standards, technical reviews and knowledge sharing.

3. Project Delivery & Production Reliability

• Translate business priorities into technical roadmaps, project plans and delivery milestones.
• Coordinate with product, business, risk and compliance teams to deliver reliable financial technology solutions.
• Take ownership of production stability, incident management, root-cause analysis and continuous improvement.
• Lead the design and development of financial systems in at least one relevant domain, such as:
• Securities brokerage, stock trading, order management, market data or trade processing.
• Cross-border payments, payment gateways, transaction processing, reconciliation, settlement or ledger systems.
• Address challenges involving high concurrency, transaction consistency, system availability and data integrity.
• Ensure systems meet applicable security, risk management and regulatory requirements.

5. Engineering Excellence & Innovation

• Improve backend architecture, development practices, system observability and engineering efficiency.
• Guide the use of technologies such as Java, Go, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, MySQL, Redis and Kafka, as appropriate to the platform.
• Evaluate relevant new technologies, including AI-assisted engineering and AI Agent applications.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
• Substantial backend engineering and financial technology experience, with a strong understanding of financial transaction workflows.
• At least 3 years of experience in technical leadership or engineering team management, with demonstrated ownership of architecture, delivery and production systems.
• Proven experience leading or managing engineering teams; experience managing a team of 5-30 people is preferred.
• Strong system architecture capabilities, including distributed systems, high availability, performance optimization and production incident management.
• Hands-on familiarity with Java and/or Go, microservices and technologies such as MySQL, Redis and Kafka.
• Experience in at least one of the following:
• Securities brokerage, online trading platforms or financial trading systems, preferably involving Hong Kong or US equities; or
• Cross-border payments, payment processing, transaction routing, reconciliation, settlement or financial ledger systems.
• Professional Mandarin Chinese proficiency for effective communication with Chinese-speaking stakeholders; working proficiency in English.
• Strong ownership, decision-making, stakeholder management and delivery execution skills.
• Currently based in Malaysia or willing to relocate to Malaysia.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience at a securities brokerage, digital trading platform, payment fintech or financial infrastructure provider.
• Experience supporting multiple markets, currencies or cross-border financial operations.
• Experience leading platform modernization, system scaling or major architecture transformation.
• Experience working with regulated financial institutions and compliance-related technology requirements.
• Ability to lead through architecture, people management and delivery governance rather than relying solely on individual coding contributions
