August 2027 Start | Kinabalu International School, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo
Kinabalu International School (KIS) is seeking an excellent Humanities teacher to join our Secondary School from August 2027.
We welcome applications from strong teachers of History, Geography and Global Perspectives, particularly those who can demonstrate the flexibility and subject knowledge to teach across more than one Humanities discipline.
The ability to teach one or more Humanities subjects to IGCSE level is essential, while experience teaching A-Level or an equivalent post-16 qualification would be a distinct advantage.
We are looking for more than strong examination results and excellent subject knowledge. We want a teacher who is intellectually curious, ambitious for every student, reflective about their practice and excited by the opportunity to contribute to a close-knit international school community.
At KIS, great Humanities teachers inspire students to question the world around them. They help young people understand the connections between people, places, societies and events, encouraging them to explore different perspectives, evaluate evidence, challenge assumptions and develop well-informed opinions.
They create classrooms that are purposeful, engaging and academically challenging, where students feel confident discussing complex ideas, developing arguments and thinking critically about the world in which they live.
Just as importantly, they are colleagues who collaborate generously, contribute beyond their own classroom and want to play an active role in the wider life of the school.
The successful candidate will be an excellent classroom practitioner with strong subject knowledge in at least one Humanities discipline, together with the flexibility and enthusiasm to contribute across the wider Humanities curriculum.
We are particularly interested in teachers who:
We would particularly welcome applications from teachers who recognise the important role Humanities education plays in developing thoughtful, informed and responsible global citizens.
The ability to teach more than one Humanities subject at examination level would be an advantage, but applicants with a strong specialism in one discipline and the willingness to contribute more broadly are equally encouraged to apply.
Applicants must hold a recognised teaching qualification and have a minimum of two years' demonstrable success in teaching. Excellent spoken and written English skills are essential.
Our approach to education and to working together is shaped by the KIS Way.
We want our students and our staff to be Curious, Collaborative, Reflective, Creative, Courageous and Respectful.
These are not simply words displayed around our school. They describe the culture we are continuing to build: one in which people ask questions, share ideas, learn from experience, take sensible risks, support one another and treat others with kindness and respect.
These values are particularly relevant to Humanities education. We want students who are curious about the world, courageous enough to challenge their assumptions, reflective about their understanding and respectful of different cultures, perspectives and experiences.
We are therefore looking for a teacher who will model these values as strongly as they teach their subject.
Kinabalu International School is a not-for-profit, parent-owned international school located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on the island of Borneo.
For more than 50 years, KIS has built an excellent reputation for providing high-quality international education within a friendly, supportive and genuinely diverse community.
We educate approximately 470 students aged 3–18 from more than 30 nationalities, following the English National Curriculum and Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level programmes.
Our students are motivated, hardworking and enjoyable to teach. Our size means that teachers are able to know their students as individuals while being part of a highly professional international staff team.
Alongside a rigorous academic programme, students participate in an extensive range of sporting, performing arts, service, leadership and co-curricular opportunities.
KIS is currently undergoing one of the most exciting periods of development in its history.
Our ambitious Vision 28 development programme represents a significant investment in the future of the school, transforming our campus, expanding opportunities for students and strengthening our provision across academic, sporting, creative and co-curricular learning.
Recent developments have included the refurbishment of our Secondary School, the establishment of a dedicated Sixth Form Centre, improvements to our library and learning environments, and substantial investment in the wider campus.
Further developments, including new sporting facilities and plans for enhanced performing arts provision, form part of our ongoing commitment to creating an exceptional environment for teaching and learning.
However, Vision 28 is about much more than buildings and facilities. It reflects our ambition to continue developing an outstanding educational experience, strengthening academic provision while creating meaningful opportunities for students to discover their interests, develop their talents and engage with the world beyond the classroom.
For a Humanities teacher, KIS offers a particularly exciting environment in which to work.
Our location in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, provides extraordinary opportunities to connect classroom learning with the wider world. From the region's remarkable environmental diversity and conservation challenges to its rich cultural heritage, complex history and rapidly changing economic and social landscape, there is enormous potential for authentic, interdisciplinary learning.
We are seeking a teacher who will recognise these opportunities and help students make meaningful connections between their studies, their communities and the wider global context.
With an increasingly ambitious student body, developing Sixth Form provision and a strong emphasis on enrichment, service learning and student leadership, this is an opportunity to make a genuine contribution to the continued development of Humanities education at KIS.
The successful candidate will be offered an initial two-year contract, with opportunities for subsequent renewal through one- or two-year contracts.
Kinabalu International School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
All applicants must be willing to undergo appropriate child-protection screening, including checks with previous employers and relevant criminal-record authorities, including the Disclosure and Barring Service where applicable.
Safeguarding questions will form part of the recruitment and interview process.
