Job description

Joining Arup

Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our Malaysia geotechnics team provides consulting engineering services to clients across the region, while collaboratively supporting the development of less experienced engineers within the group. Working across a broad portfolio of medium to large infrastructure projects, our engineers bring curiosity, technical rigour and a collaborative spirit to every challenge — from ground investigation through to complex tunnelling design.

The Opportunity

You will provide detailed design work across a broad range of projects within geotechnics and tunnelling engineering and related areas, collaborating with the team to assist in conducting modelling, analytical research and design work to assess ground behaviour and underground structure performance. Where appropriate, you will liaise with other groups within the geography and more broadly across the region, providing particular expertise in geotechnical engineering.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include
  • Working under direct guidance within a defined area of responsibility, taking ownership of specific parts of external design projects, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of your own work.
  • Assisting project managers in coordinating project tasks, learning to track project progress, and participating in project meetings and updates, whilst developing informative presentations for different audiences and striving for clarity and engagement.
  • Preparing project reports for clients summarising key issues and strategically advising on best outcomes, assisting in coordinating project activities to align with overarching goals, and monitoring project progress and interdependencies whilst seeking guidance from senior colleagues as needed.
  • Assisting in preparing soil investigation contract documentation — including specifications and cost estimates — and supporting the preparation and delivery of detailed tender submissions and presentations.
  • Assisting in the ongoing development and maintenance of quality systems within the Malaysia office, with full awareness of legislative requirements governing occupational health and safety, and supporting the firm's compliance in maintaining ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 requirements.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?
  • You hold a recognised relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a similar area, with a minimum of 2 years' relevant experience in geotechnics engineering works, gained within a consulting business environment on medium to large infrastructure projects.
  • You are proficient in Microsoft Office and Autodesk AutoCAD, with awareness or knowledge of coding and scripting tools such as Grasshopper or Python, digital tools such as GIS, OpenGround, gINT or Leapfrog, and finite element software such as Plaxis or similar.
  • You bring solid knowledge and technical experience in geotechnics and tunnelling engineering, a proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice, and the ability to independently undertake project and technical analyses and report on results.
  • You have good communication and interpersonal skills — across formal and informal presentations and written communications — with a keen understanding of client needs and the ability to work well with people at all levels, both internally and externally.
