Job summary

Advanced Energy Management Limited in Penang, Malaysia, seeks a Failure Analysis (FA) engineer to support the FA function by reviewing processes, enhancing analysis methods, and monitoring field quality data for accuracy and consistency.

You will lead FA technicians, deliver RCCA and corrective actions, support NPI and derivative part introductions, coordinate with design and production, and drive yield improvement across multiple departments.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of electronic circuits, PCBs and manufacturing processes.

Job description

The Failure Analysis (FA) engineer supports the Failure Analysis Engineering function by reviewing product processes, enhancing and developing analysis methods, and monitoring field quality data for accuracy and consistency. Performs engineering work in basic and applied research, development, design of new products and/or sustaining existing products. Provides support to factory and design, giving useful feedback to help solve failures. Acts as a bridge between supplier, design, and factory.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Designs, modifies, and evaluates electronic apparatus components or circuitry for use in electronic equipment and devices.
  • Creates, modifies, sustains, and maintains software for testing. Verifies and improves test coverage.
  • Designs and modifies the test fixture to meet and improve product quality and reduce operation cost by moving detection (CA/PA) failure as early as possible.
  • Designs power supply circuits based on previously used topologies to meet specific parameters. Includes loop stability, magnetic design, and worst‑case component analysis.
  • Understands new product release and engineering change procedures to support the product during and after its transition into manufacturing.
  • Participates in yield and continuous improvement actions.
  • Provides product test field failure analysis support. Performs simulation and evaluation, duplicates failures detected in the field and provides Root Cause Analysis and RCCA.
  • Provides customer field failure analysis support. Attends customer meetings and presents on the failure analysis findings/root cause, and provides effective RCCA & related preventative action.
  • Coordinates and delivers daily Failure Analysis WIP turnaround for daily production fulfillment inclusive of Top‑Level Assembly (TLA) and In‑Source Sub‑Assembly.
  • Manages a group of technicians, coordinating Failure Analysis output based on customer demand. Provides training to FA technicians to be competent for the allocated Product Platform.
  • Establishes / Maintains Failure Analysis Data pool, generates/enhances Failure Analysis Guidelines to improve productivity and accuracy. Drives yield improvement with various departments such as Production/Hybrid/Test/Process/SQE/Quality. Improves workmanship, test coverage, test accuracy, and supplier quality.
  • Communicates with Product Development / Engineering team for any unknown / hardcore failure for resolution within the shortest time.
  • Acts as a core player in NPI / New derivative Part Number introduction. Performs Failure Analysis for unknown technical issues, communicating with Product Development/Engineering team for resolution.
  • Provides disposition of defective parts in MRB meetings. Engineers decisions for rework, RTV, scrap with engineering data support.
  • Acts as custodian for FA Non‑Netting Inventory. Responsible for inventory accuracy and performs periodic inventory counts upon request from Inventory Team.
  • Adheres to organizational requirements on quality management, health and safety, code of conduct, legal stipulations, environmental, 5S policies and general duty of care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Works in a fast‑paced engineering/manufacturing lab environment.
  • Also works in a standard office environment and uses general office equipment (telephone, PC, copier, fax machine).
  • Completes many repetitive tasks that include the use of electronic assembly equipment.
  • Troubleshoots high voltage power supplies.
  • Operates sampling and real‑time oscilloscopes, pulse generators, meters, power supplies, and special test fixtures.
  • May be required to work overtime during periods of increased demand.
  • Travel to international locations may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proficient knowledge and troubleshooting skills in electronic circuits, components, PCBs, and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong knowledge of the physical structure, properties, and behavior of engineering materials to identify primary failure modes for electrical components, PCBs, and assemblies.
  • Requires effective verbal and written communication skills to clearly convey factual learnings.
  • Ability to handle moderately complex engineering assignments.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment to resolve problems.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage many projects at one time.
  • Ability to be creative.
  • Engineering skills include FMEA/DOE and Reliability Engineering.
  • Prepares CA/PA reports for internal or external customers.
  • Tools needed for troubleshooting/debug/test theory/Engineering prototype unit.
EXPERIENCE
  • Above 10 years of working experience, 5 years of experience working in manufacturing technical engineering.
  • Ability to lead and coach failure analysis engineers level I & II.
  • Ability to communicate with manufacturing members.
  • Ability to manage many projects at one time.
  • Ability to understand manufacturing operating process.
  • Ability to solve complex issues quickly and with quality, expert knowledge of the electronic circuit.
  • Acts as a team leader to support complex and high‑tech products, setting schedules and timelines to manage projects.
  • Leads Root Cause Analysis for PCBA Yield Improvement.
  • Electrical safety training (additional company safety courses may be required). Familiar with plant operation system.
  • Has good knowledge of 8D, FMEA, lean manufacturing.
  • Electronic circuit troubleshooting skills.
EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Engineering or equivalent education.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in technical engineering.
  • Certified 6‑sigma or equivalent statistical, problem‑solving methodology.
