Talent Source Global is seeking an L1.5 Data Center Operations Engineer for an on-site role in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. You will bridge physical operations with basic remote system administration, handling server and network hardware maintenance, asset management, and structured cabling.
The role requires 1–3 years in data center environments, a relevant diploma, and hands-on VM and OS troubleshooting. Mandarin skills are a plus for APAC coordination.
This is a full-time or contract role based entirely on-site in Johor Bahru, Malaysia (working standard business hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM). Operating as an L1.5 Data Center Operations Engineer, you will serve as the hands‑on link between basic physical operations (L1) and advanced remote system administration (L2). You will manage day‑to‑day server and network equipment maintenance, perform hardware troubleshooting, oversee asset management, deploy structured cabling, and coordinate with facilities and third‑party vendors.
Key Responsibilities
Physical Operations & Hardware Maintenance: Manage the installation, rack-mounting, labeling, and routine physical inspections of server and network hardware. Conduct component-level break-fix activities (such as replacing RAM, hard drives, or power supply units) and support out‑of‑warranty system repairs.
Incident Diagnostics & Triage: Act as the first line of defense for system alerts. Perform initial hardware diagnostics, harvest diagnostic logs, and execute pre‑vendor triage to accelerate escalations.
Virtual Infrastructure & IP Management: Create, configure, and decommission virtual machines (VMs) and virtual hosts. Assist with basic remote network configurations and IP address provisioning.
Asset & Inventory Management: Maintain precise records of production equipment, spare parts, and storage configurations. Keep server inventories and physical asset registries up to date.
Structured Cabling & Facilities Coordination: Deploy, organize, and validate physical copper and fiber‑optic cabling. Partner with facility engineering teams to manage rack power loads, thermal conditions, and overall environmental monitoring.
Years of Experience
Required Experience: The job description specifies a requirement for direct, practical experience supporting data center operations or IT infrastructure environments. At an L1.5 level, this typically requires 1 to 3 years of hands‑on data center environment experience.
Education: A Diploma in Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.
Hardware Architecture: X86 server architectures (such as Dell, HPE, Inspur, or Lenovo server platforms) and enterprise network routing/switching hardware.
Virtualization: Hands‑on experience with hypervisors and virtual environments (such as VMware ESXi, KVM, or Hyper‑V) to provision, modify, and decommission VMs.
Operating Systems: Basic command‑line troubleshooting and diagnostics in Linux/Unix and Windows Server operating systems.
Network Infrastructure: Fundamental understanding of TCP/IP networking, subnetting, IP provisioning, and physical port configurations.
Cabling Standards: Practical understanding of fiber optic (Single‑mode/Multi‑mode) and copper structured cabling types, connectors, and patch panels.
Candidates who present the following backgrounds will have a distinct advantage in the selection process:
Mandarin Language Proficiency: Highly preferred to support communication and project coordination with regional engineering teams and vendors across APAC.
Enterprise/Colocation Data Center Experience: Prior experience working inside high‑security, multi‑tenant colocation facilities (such as Equinix, Bridge Data Centres, or Digital Realty).
ITSM & Change Management: Familiarity with change control processes, ticketing management tools, and service SLA standards.
Carrier Coordination: Direct experience coordinating with local telecommunications carriers and physical logistics providers for fiber line testing and hardware deliveries.
