山海觀 The Overlook is seeking an entry-level pastry/kitchen assistant in Malaysia, Selangor. A culinary certificate or diploma is an added advantage but not compulsory.
The role focuses on pastry and dessert prep under supervision in a hot kitchen, with opportunities to learn Japanese/Chinese fine-dining techniques. The ideal candidate is a problem solver with teamwork, initiative and good Mandarin and English skills.
Culinary certificate or diploma from an accredited institution with experience in pastry/dessert making is an added advantage, but not compulsory. This is an entry level position.
Previous experience in similar role in a hot/cuisine kitchen, preferably in a Japanese and/or Chinese fine-dining restaurant is desired. Experience in dessert and/or pastry making is an added advantage.
A problem solver, ability to operate and work as a team effectively and independently, someone who is initiative and takes his job seriously.
Ensure a high standard of personal hygiene and grooming is maintained at all times.
Good communication and interpersonal skills, conversant in speaking and reading Mandarin and English.
Strong attention to detail with ability to perform repetitive tasks on a daily basis.
Ability to work in a hot and fast-paced kitchen environment and adapt to changing priorities.
Creative and inquisitive, passionate in food culture, with a strong interest to learn and improve operation processes.
Fit and resilient, ability to lift heavy equipment and ingredients, this is a physically demanding job.
Attended Food Handling Course
Non-smoker preferred, with a strong commitment to personal hygiene

Assist the Executive Chef and Sous Chef in cooking preparation and operation, including but not limited to Mise en Place (gather and prep all ingredients before service starts), cooking and basic plating.
Maintain a clean and organized kitchen and work area, including dish washing, cleaning and sanitising of all work areas to adhere to food safety rules and standards.
Adhere to all health and safety standards and regulations.
Assist with inventory management and ordering of food and kitchen supplies.
Follow recipes and SOPs consistently.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Chef and management team, such as pastry and/or dessert work.
