Job summary

Tawakkal Specialist Hospital in Kuala Lumpur is looking for a Care Assistant to assist qualified nurses in delivering nursing care to patients. You will be responsible for maintaining a clean environment, addressing patient needs, and supporting nursing staff in various tasks.

The ideal candidate has a Certificate in Care Assistance, is fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia, and is ready to work in shifts including weekends and public holidays. On-the-job training will be provided.

Job description

Summary of Duties

Assists the qualified nurses in providing care to all patients within an assigned unit of the hospital and such nursing care is an integral part of the individualized holistic patient care plan as directed by the Medical staff according to the Policies and Procedures of the hospital and in keeping with the generally accepted principles, policies and procedures of the Nursing Services.

Responsibilities

• Understands and carries out nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Philosophy, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services and hospital.
• Understands the service organization structure.
• Informs Nurse-In-Charge or Unit Manager when changes occur in circumstances which affect standards of care.
• Receives ward report and assignment before the change of each shift.
• Attends meetings held by the services to discuss issues and matters pertaining to the operation of the service.
• Daily routine: performs regular nursing rounds on all patients in the wards to ascertain other additional needs, talks to patient/family members, makes and tidies patients’ beds, changes linen when necessary, carbolizes beds and equipment, tidies patient’s bedside lockers, cardiac tables, chairs and surrounding areas, maintains cleanliness of ward, pantry, treatment room, utility and linen room, collects, cleans and fills hot water flasks for patients, dispatches charge tickets, CSSS items, specimens, etc. to relevant services.
• Answers phone calls and relays messages.
• Responds to patient’s call bell promptly.
• Assists qualified staff by carrying out basic nursing care for patients’ comfort, safety, nutritional and elimination needs; handling admissions, transfers and discharges; providing bed baths; assisting ambulatory patients; performing dressing, setting intravenous lines, catheterization, vulva swabbing; clearing and washing instruments; recording charges for disposable/equipment/consumable items and allocating to patient’s charges accordingly; maintaining intake and output charts; lifting, turning and positioning patients using correct body mechanics; treating pressure sores; taking diet orders; serving meals and drinks, collecting trays; feeding orally; preparing drinks at night; and chaperoning consultants during procedures and ward rounds in absence of trained nurses.
• Accompanies nurses to send patients to OT and from OT.
• Escorts patients to other services for diagnostic investigations.
• Adheres to hospital policies and procedures and nursing code of conduct.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient’s personal and medical history.
• Ensures adherence to Prevention and Control of infection.
• Assists qualified staff by maintaining proper storage and condition of biomedical equipment, reporting faults, keeping accurate records of equipment, medical supplies, and drugs, and ensuring adequate ward stock supplies.

Qualifications

• Possesses academic qualification of SPM; Certificate in Care Assistant.
• Able to converse fluently and write in English language and Bahasa Malaysia.
• On the job training/in-service training will be provided.
• Experience working in a hospital setting is an advantage.
• Willingness to work scheduled hours, shift, weekends, public holidays and anytime when called during emergency.
