Your Mission
The Trade Compliance Specialist (Mexico) ensures all import and export operations in Mexico comply with Mexican customs regulations as well as international trade regulations. In this role, you will manage customs documentation, free trade agreement (FTA) qualification (USMCA, EU-MX, MX-Colombia), tariff classification, and post-entry processes. You will partner with cross-functional teams, customs brokers, and freight forwarders to mitigate risk and streamline cross-border transactions.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and interpret Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to determine eligibility for preferential duty treatment
- Collaborate on HTS classification and country-of-origin determinations for imported and exported goods
- Maintain compliance with customs regulations and trade laws across multiple jurisdictions
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure accurate documentation, duty payments and reporting
- Monitor changes in trade policies and provide recommendations to mitigate risks and maximize benefits
- Prepare and submit regulatory documents to MX Customs and other relevant authorities
- Support audits related to trade compliance and duty recovery
- Utilize trade data analytics to identify cost-saving opportunities and improve supply chain efficiency
- Develop, maintain and implement trade compliance policies and procedures
- Conduct audits and risk assessments to identify and address compliance gaps
- Proactively collaborate with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and government agencies to facilitate smooth customs clearance
- Respond to trade compliance issues or violations and implement corrective actions
- Communicate changes in trade regulations and advise management on potential impacts
- Oversee implementation of key Import/Export compliance activities by the individual businesses, and act as resource for the businesses for special projects
- Manage and perform Post Entry Audits and export shipment audits, and ongoing compliance reviews of the businesses
- Prepare, validate, and maintain import and export customs documentation (pedimentos, commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin)
- Execute FTA qualification and analysis to determine eligibility under USMCA, EU-MX, MX-Colombia, and other applicable agreements
- Assign and review Harmonized System (HS) tariff classifications for exports of products and components
- Manage post-entry activities, including CF28/CF29 responses, protests, refunds, drawbacks, and post-entry amendments
- Maintain and update the Global Trade Services (GTS) or ERP trade compliance module in accordance with current regulations
- Liaise with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and government authorities (SAT, DGA) to resolve compliance issues and ensure timely clearance
- Monitor changes in Mexican customs legislation, FTA rules, and import/export controls; communicate updates and deliver targeted training to stakeholders
- Support internal and external trade compliance audits and investigations; prepare documentation and implement corrective actions as needed
- Maintain accurate and complete recordkeeping
- Additional duties and responsibilities as required
- Ongoing training as required
Preferred Qualifications and Education
- Experience and a strong knowledge of trade compliance, customs regulations, international trade agreements
- Past experience analyzing and working with Free Trade Agreements
- BS in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or equivalent
- Fluently Bilingual (English and Spanish); both verbal and written is required
- Broker\'s license or Certification in Customs Compliance preferred but not required
- Extensive knowledge of trade compliance programs
- In-Depth knowledge of Mexico import/export rules, regulations, and processes
- Understanding of supply chain processes and the relationship to trade compliance
- Understanding of domestic and international transportation processes
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint & Word)
