American Axle & Manufacturing in Guanajuato, Mexico, seeks a Sr Tooling Engineer to lead the tooling strategy for high-volume automotive machining operations, ensuring tool availability, cost control, and productivity improvements.

You will head the Tool Setter/Tool Crib team, manage monthly tooling budgets, develop PFET plans, monitor tool life and cost-per-unit, and collaborate across Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, and Purchasing to sustain process stability.

Formación

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of tooling management experience in automotive/high-volume machining.
  • Proven experience leading technical personnel.
  • Experience managing tooling budgets exceeding USD $300K per month.
  • Strong knowledge of CNC machining, cutting tools, inserts, holders, and workholding.
  • Experience with Budget planning, Forecast, Cost Control, and financial KPI management.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, Root Cause Analysis, and problem-solving methodologies.
  • Advanced English communication skills (preferred).

Responsabilidades

  • Lead and coordinate the Tool Setter/Tool Crib technical team to ensure safe, efficient, and standardized operations.
  • Manage a monthly tooling budget, maintaining strict cost control and achieving Budget and Forecast targets.
  • Develop, prepare, and monitor the annual Budget and monthly Forecast for direct and indirect tooling expenses.
  • Drive continuous cost reduction initiatives, delivering annual savings of more than USD $600,000 through tooling optimization and process improvements.
  • Develop and maintain PFET (Plan for Every Tool) to maximize the service life of cutting tools, inserts, holders, centers, and other machining tooling.
  • Monitor and improve CPU (Cost per Unit) performance by implementing effective tooling management strategies and administrative controls.
  • Analyze tooling consumption, tool wear, tooling failures, and process capability to identify improvement opportunities that enhance tool life, reduce costs, and improve manufacturing performance.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Quality, Maintenance, Purchasing, and suppliers to ensure tooling availability and process stability.
  • Lead tooling trials, validation of new cutting technologies, supplier evaluations, and implementation of best manufacturing practices.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs related to tooling cost, tool life, inventory, downtime, and productivity.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement initiatives to improve OEE, reduce waste, and increase operational efficiency.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Summary Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field with 5 years of experience in the position. We are looking for a Tool Setter Sr. Engineer to lead the tooling management strategy for our high-volume automotive machining operations. This position is responsible for ensuring tooling availability, optimizing tooling costs, improving tool life, and leading technical personnel while meeting operational, quality, and financial objectives.

  • Strong knowledge of CNC machining, cutting tools, inserts, holders, workholding, and machining processes.
  • Experience with Budget planning, Forecast, Cost Control, and financial KPI management.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, Root Cause Analysis, and problem-solving methodologies.
  • Advanced analytical skills with a strong focus on cost optimization and productivity.
  • Advanced English communication skills (preferred).
