Overview
Global Engineering Services - Emerging Countries - Construction team supporting APAC and LATAM is looking for an experienced Construction Manager who will be a key member of the Mexican Operations team. This role includes project management for planning, design, and construction of new Fulfillment Centers, extension of existing facilities, and any new sites. The Construction Manager will contribute to the development and implementation of the Mexican and EC facility network infrastructure with opportunities to engage in the Amazon network.
This role combines construction engineering, planning, project management, facilities management, and contract management. It requires a person who can demonstrate proven ability in planning and design, and in project management and control of new and enhanced facility buildings. The role includes travel of up to 40% to MX and EC locations.
Key responsibilities
- Overseeing construction engineering, planning, and design for fulfillment centers (FCs) and other new or expansion projects
- Providing project support on new fulfillment network buildings and additional capacity requirements
- Leading construction scope review and development with internal operational customers, and coordinating engineering and design efforts on new and remodel projects
- Preparing reports, specifications, and technical analyses to define design requirements, equipment, and services for capacity expansion and remodel projects
- Overseeing and facilitating ground-up shell, tenant improvement (TI), and engineering deployment for new facilities within the network
- Providing technical direction on engineering design, AutoCAD, building design, layouts, build details, schedules, and materials in accordance with Amazon specifications
- Negotiating contracts with general contractors and trade contractors and presenting formal documentation for approval when required
- Ensuring contracts are fit for purpose, cost-effective, and include appropriate service level agreements
- Providing overall site management, coordination, planning, and coordination of subcontractors
- Facilitating due diligence evaluation of new opportunities with cross-functional teams
- Partnering with teams responsible for transition of base building management and turnover documentation
- Coaching and guiding project teams throughout the full project lifecycle
- Ensuring contracted resources deliver work to meet duration and quality targets, addressing under-performance issues
- Auditing contractors to verify skills and competencies of contract labor and alignment with needs
- Informing contractors of projected changes in resource or work demand to enable appropriate action
- Supporting contractors’ work to achieve higher performance levels
- Overseeing multiple projects in various locations concurrently
- Providing critical review of current design standards to identify value engineering and design enhancement opportunities
- Comprehensive budget tracking, forecasting, and management of assigned expansion, remodel, and new build projects
- Reviewing and guiding internally requested changes for validity, impact, and timely, cost-sensitive incorporation once approved
- Maintaining positive, clear, and transparent cross-team communication for all aspects of project delivery
A day in the life
A day in the life of a Construction Manager includes prioritizing internal Amazon stakeholders and project requirements while ensuring Amazon specifications are met, traveling between projects, addressing General Contractor queries, and liaising with consultants, authorities, and global Amazon teams to ensure projects meet customer needs. The role requires thriving in a fast-paced environment and effectively communicating risks and mitigations.
About the team
The role involves cross-functional collaboration with the EU, NA, Brazil, and Australia. The team is global, with extensive experience across thousands of large-scale projects, building a network to improve the customer experience and logistics network.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- 7+ years of experience in project management, real estate development, or architecture/design
- Experience in project management, real estate development, and architecture/design
- Experience operating within at least two disciplines in the construction industry (e.g., General Contracting, Owner’s Representation, Commercial Development, or Engineering and Design)
- Project management experience from due diligence and design through implementation and operation
- Experience negotiating construction, procurement, and labor contracts
- Ability to work in an ambiguous environment and deliver results
- Master’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management
- Ability to communicate Amazon requirements to diverse audiences (e.g., senior management, peers, vendors)
- Languages: Spanish, French, Polish, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish, Afrikaans, and Zulu are considered preferred qualifications
