Job summary

Sonoco is seeking a Material Handler to support safe and precise operation of heavy machinery and material handling. The role reports to the Shift Supervisor and emphasizes leading by example, quality checks, and maintaining production flow.

Typical duties include strap/pallet handling, using strapping tools, ensuring accurate documentation, and assisting with loading trucks. The candidate should have prior raw materials handling experience and forklift operation skills.

Qualifications

• Experience handling raw materials in a manufacturing setting.
• Experience as a forklift driver.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and lead/mentor a subordinate group.
• Comprehensive knowledge of safety and quality procedures.

Responsibilities

• Strap pallets: 2 way or 4 way depending on customer location, using the right dunnage.
• Use strapping gun and Ergo machine.
• Quality inspection – check specs on samples with a measuring tape.
• Ensure all floor documentation is complete and placed in the plastic envelope.
• Move strips and finished goods to aid production flow.
• Operate the wrapping machine and replace wrapping roll.
• Strap pallets using conventional methods; hand-wrap if needed.
• Use buddy check system to assist when loading trucks.
• Inspect incoming board/rolls; verify flute/caliper and sizes match PO.
• Assist with miscellaneous assignments and general labor.
• Perform tasks as directed by supervision.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Strap pallets: 2 way or 4 way depending on the costumer location, using the right dunnage.
• Using strapping gun and ergo machine.
• Quality inspection- Be able to check specs on sample provided using measuring tape.
• Make sure that all documentation from the floor is completed and in the plastic envelope.
• Move strips and finished goods to help with the flow of production.
• Use the wrapping machine and replace wrapping roll.
• Strap pallets using conventional way, hand wrapping if needed.
• Use the buddy check system to assist when loading trucks.
• Inspect incoming board/rolls and make sure flute/caliper and sizes match purchase order.
• Help with miscellaneous assignments and general labor.
• Perform tasks as assigned by supervision.

• You have previous experience handling raw materials in a manufacturing setting and previous experience as a Forklift Driver.
• Can safely handle all products and materials.
• Can perform work under minimal supervision and handle complex issues and problems and refer only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.
• Possess comprehensive knowledge of subject matter.
• Can act as a lead and provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group.
