Is responsible for the design and development of precision tooling, injection molds, LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) molds, and production fixtures. This role ensures that all tooling and fixturing designs meet company standards for quality, manufacturability, and efficiency, supporting new product introductions and ongoing production needs.
- Design plastic injection molds, LSR
- (silicone) injection molds, and precision assembly/test fixtures using advanced
- 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CATIA, or similar).
- Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D
- models, including parting lines, shut-offs, cooling channels, venting, ejector
- systems, gating, and runner layouts.
- Incorporate Design for
- Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles into all
- designs.
- Perform or review mold flow analyses
- (e.g., Moldflow, Moldex3D) to predict part filling, cooling, and warpage, and implement design improvements accordingly.
- Design fixtures for assembly,
- inspection, and testing, ensuring ergonomic, repeatable, and accurate operation.
- Create and maintain Bills of
- Materials (BOMs), drawings, and revision-controlled design files.
- Collaborate with mold makers, tool
- shops, and suppliers during tool fabrication and trials.
- Support tooling trials, validation
- builds, and production ramp-ups, providing design insights and troubleshooting assistance.
- Participate in FMEA reviews, lead
- design reviews, and lessons-learned sessions to drive continuous improvement.
- Maintain compliance with company,
- safety, and quality standards (e.g., ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485 if applicable).
- Stay current with tooling
- technologies, materials, and manufacturing methods, including hot runners, cold runners, and LSR injection systems.
- Directly support product management in customer discussions.Model proposed tool split geometry and customize models for preferred embodiment.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Tool Design, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
Experience:
- Minimum 4–6 years of experience in plastic injection and/or silicone mold design.
- Strong understanding of mold construction, material shrinkage, venting, and gatingdesign.
- Familiarity with LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) tooling, including cold runner systems, valve gates, and temperature control design.
- Experience designing production fixtures (for assembly, measurement, and testing).
- Skilled in 3D CAD modeling and detailing (SolidWorks, NX, CATIA, Creo, or equivalent).
- Knowledge of GD&T, tolerancing, and mold machining processes.
- Experience with mold flow or FEA simulation tools preferred.
