Job Description

You Lead the Way. We’ve Got Your Back. At American Express, we know that with the right backing, people and businesses have the power to progress in incredible ways. Whether we’re supporting our customers’ financial confidence to move ahead, taking commerce to new heights, or encouraging people to explore the world, our colleagues are constantly redefining what’s possible — and we’re proud to back each other every step of the way. When you join #TeamAmex, you become part of a diverse community of over 60,000 colleagues, all with a common goal to deliver an exceptional customer experience every day. American Express Credit and Fraud Risk (CFR) leads end-to-end credit risk management of our consumer and commercial businesses. This entails developing and implementing strategies across customer life cycle - targeting, underwriting, credit limit management, ongoing customer management and collection activities to deliver profitable business growth without adverse surprises while providing an outstanding customer experience. We use cutting edge analytical techniques to generate insights from data to drive optimal decisions that balance growth with acceptable risks. The team works in close partnership with cross-functional teams across geographies and interacts extensively with external entities such as credit bureaus, new data providers and start-ups to develop and implement products and strategies.

Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end underwriting strategies for new accounts in Mexico to profitably grow the consumer and commercial businesses while controlling net loss provision.
  • Collaborate with and influence business partners to enhance the value proposition, improve customer experience, and strengthen adherence to regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Effectively interact and collaborate with colleagues from the central Risk Management organization, as well as Operations and Marketing teams, to develop, improve, and implement credit strategies and processes.
  • Manage relationships and data strategy with local credit bureau(s) and other information providers, including monitoring data quality. A critical component of the role will be driving credit risk strategies and evaluating partnerships with data providers, fintechs, and other service providers that enhance credit risk processes.
  • Develop a deep understanding of and closely monitor key indicators of credit performance across underwriting processes and their implications for emerging trends. Diagnose issues, identify opportunities for improvement and/or corrective action, conduct ad hoc analytics, and perform independent risk assessments to identify potential emerging risks and performance issues.
  • Monitor and understand regulatory and industry developments and proactively identify potential threats and opportunities.
  • Lead and inspire a team of successful managers and analysts, with responsibility for hiring, training, development, and performance assessment.
Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in credit risk management, with an in-depth understanding of consumer and commercial businesses, the credit lifecycle, underwriting strategies, and credit metrics and processes.
  • Demonstrated people leadership skills, with a track record of independently driving strategies and making sound decisions.
  • Strong analytical skills and an innovative approach to solving both practical and theoretical problems.
  • Intellectual curiosity, adaptability in a multifaceted environment, and the ability to reinvent processes and infrastructure.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships, operate effectively in large cross-functional teams, and influence colleagues to drive change.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize key points and influence decision-making.
  • A positive “will to win” attitude and the ability to excel in dynamic, high-pressure environments, navigate ambiguity, and prioritize based on business impact.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels of the organization, as well as with external partners.
  • Ability to assess internal and external factors, connect them effectively, and develop appropriate business and risk management strategies.
