Merit Medical seeks a Controls, Programming & Electrical Engineer to design, program, and implement automation for custom medical device manufacturing equipment. You will lead electrical design, PLC/HMI programming, robotics integration, and commissioning while collaborating with Mechanical, Manufacturing, Quality, Validation, and Operations teams.

Responsibilities include developing electrical schematics, panel layouts, BOMs; programming PLCs (Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal);

Formación

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Mechatronics/Automation or related field.
  • 3+ years in industrial automation, controls engineering, or electrical engineering.
  • Experience programming PLCs (Allen-Bradley Studio 5000; Siemens TIA Portal).
  • Experience developing HMI applications.
  • Reading electrical schematics and developing wiring diagrams.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP/IP networks.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.

Responsabilidades

  • Design and develop electrical control systems for custom automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and BOMs.
  • Program, test, and troubleshoot PLC-based automation systems.
  • Develop HMI applications for machine operation, monitoring, diagnostics, and data collection.
  • Support integration of robotics, machine vision, servos, sensors, and industrial networks.
  • Assist in startup, commissioning, FAT, SAT activities.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Design to ensure proper hardware/software integration.
  • Modify and improve existing systems for reliability and productivity.
  • Troubleshoot issues to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain project docs, software backups, and revision records.
  • Support process validation and equipment qualification.
  • Ensure compliance with machine safety standards and medical device requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and automation projects.

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Controls, Programming & Electrical Engineer to support the design, development, programming, and implementation of automation systems for custom manufacturing equipment used in the medical device industry.

This position will be responsible for electrical design, PLC and HMI programming, robotics integration, machine commissioning, and troubleshooting of automated equipment. The engineer will work closely with Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Validation, and Operations teams to develop reliable and efficient automation solutions that meet production, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop electrical control systems for custom automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Program, test, and troubleshoot PLC-based automation systems.
  • Develop HMI applications for machine operation, monitoring, diagnostics, and data collection.
  • Support the integration of robotics, machine vision systems, servo motors, sensors, and industrial networks.
  • Assist in equipment startup, troubleshooting, commissioning, FAT, and SAT activities.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Design Engineers to ensure proper hardware and software integration.
  • Modify and improve existing automation systems to increase reliability, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, and programming issues to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Maintain project documentation, software backups, electrical drawings, and revision records.
  • Support process validation and equipment qualification activities as required.
  • Ensure compliance with machine safety standards and medical device manufacturing requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and automation projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
  • Advanced English level
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or electrical engineering.
  • Experience programming PLCs, preferably:
  • Allen-Bradley (Studio 5000)
  • Siemens (TIA Portal)
  • Experience developing HMI applications.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols:
  • Ethernet/IP
  • Profinet
  • Modbus TCP/IP
  • Understanding of servo motors, motion control systems, sensors, and industrial automation components.
  • Ability to read and develop electrical schematics.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar electrical design software.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • English proficiency sufficient to communicate with global teams and suppliers.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience in medical device manufacturing environments.
  • Robotics programming experience with Epson, FANUC, ABB, or Universal Robots.
  • Experience with Cognex or Keyence vision systems.
  • Knowledge of machine safety concepts and risk assessments.
  • Familiarity with FDA, ISO 13485, and GMP requirements.
  • Experience with MES, SCADA, or manufacturing data collection systems.
  • Understanding of validation activities such as IQ, OQ, and PQ.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
