Role Purpose

With only general guidelines, is able to propose, plan, coordinate, and control projects of moderate complexity and risk involving one or two technologies/organizational units (e.g., building a melting unit) or new product with a process extension. Projects typically have moderate financial and/or strategic impact on the corporation. Manages project resources (people, budgets, etc.) as necessary to support overall business objectives. Provides technical and non‑technical guidance (oversight) to ensure systems are technically and economically successful. Supervises and participates in the development of solutions and resolutions to complex problems requiring ingenuity and creativity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide project leadership for key projects including new process or product development, capital projects such as capacity expansions, relocation, modifications, alterations, or manufacturing process improvements.
  • Establish requirements with customer(s); understand nature of the business requirements for each project.
  • Establish overall project plans (scope, schedule, cost estimates, project acceptance criteria, procurement/contracting strategy, risk management, etc.). Assist in project evaluation and justification. Work with the business in the preparation of Appropriation Requests (A/R).
  • Establish roles, responsibilities and competencies required for the project. Build an effective project team utilizing internal and external personnel resources with the ability to operate and supervise matrixed organizations. Establish receivership requirements for project.
  • Conduct project meetings and document key issues, action items and decisions. Communicate and provide guidance to project team members (Engineering/Manufacturing) based on organizational goals and company policy.
  • Provide periodic project updates to customer(s) and management. Communicate project goals, objectives, key status information and overall impact of the project effectively with project team members.
  • Effectively implement all phases of project methodologies to include appropriate initiation, planning, implementation and control, and close‑out elements.
  • Regularly and effectively communicate and update project key issues, status of completion and financial forecasts with project customers, senior management sponsors and senior management steering teams.
  • Actively coach and develop individuals on project team. Project team member assignments established with individual competency development as objective. Provide recognition to project and customer team members.
  • Share expertise and knowledge to foster continuous improvement of the organization (project team or functional unit).
  • Implement and model a safety program to ensure that LTAs and Recordable Incidence rate = or.
Experiences/Education – Required
  • B.S. Engineering or equivalent technical degree.
  • Proven track record of global project accomplishments as a project lead with increasing scope, complexity, responsibility, impact, risk, etc.
  • Track record of delivering results within cost and schedule with close and timely communications with the internal Customer.
  • Track record of engineering accomplishment. Recognized as a technical leader / subject matter expert in one or more technical disciplines fully capable in related disciplines.
  • Proficient in Project Management skills and methodologies inclusive of Scope Development, Scheduling, Cost & Budget Management, Quality Management, and Risk Management.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate within a matrix organization. Utilizes influence versus control. Can manage in the “gray” areas.
  • Sound problem solving and decision making processes and skills. Proficient in quality tools including Kepner‑Tregoe, Performance Excellence, Project Management tools, etc.
  • Computer/Information Technology Skills Desired. Basics – MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of MS Project or other Project scheduling tools.
  • Results oriented with a high commitment level.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills across all levels of the organization. Must be an effective communicator, able to deliver message through presentations, written, and verbal messages.
  • Conflict management – seeks win‑win solutions. Calms down and resolves problems versus escalating.
Experiences/Education – Desired
  • M.S. or equivalent technical degree. Business understanding & training highly recommended.
  • Variety of research, development, engineering, operational, and/or plant experiences.
  • Project Team focused on single or multiple technical discipline of increased complexity.
  • Prior supervisory / functional management experience.
  • Possesses strong network with Corning global technical community and key external suppliers / partners.
  • External recognition such as Green / Yellow / Black Belt, Lean, PMI, Professional Engineering or Committee member of a Technical society.
  • Future Project Management Certification program may apply.
