Organization: Foundational Questions Institute (FQxI)

About

The Foundational Questions Institute (FQxI), www.fqxi.org, supports cutting-edge, rigorous research into the deep, open questions at the heart of physics and cosmology. From the nature of time and quantum reality to the foundations of spacetime and emergence, FQxI fosters an intellectually adventurous community exploring the frontiers of science and philosophy.

As part of its ongoing mission, the Foundational Questions Institute is launching a collection of review papers, the Foundational Review Series—a curated series of review articles on foundational topics in science, with a particular interest in (but not limited to) foundational physics and cosmology. The series is intended to serve as an authoritative and engaging resource for researchers, educators, and intellectually curious audiences. FQxI is seeking an Academic Managing Editor to oversee the publication of ~10 papers per year, ranging in length from 50 to 100 pages.

Responsibilities
  • Editorial Vision & Strategy
    • Develop and maintain an editorial roadmap in consultation with FQxI leadership.
    • With FQxI leadership, identify core and emerging topics in foundational physics suitable for in-depth review.
    • Actively commission review articles from a diverse range of scholars, including both established figures and new voices.
    • Ensure alignment with FQxI’s mission to spotlight bold, foundational thinking.
  • Editorial & Publication Management
    • Serve as lead editor for all submissions: provide developmental editing, coordinate peer review, and guide authors through revisions, or send the submission to a subject area editor for review and coordinate their work on the submission.
    • Manage a high degree of editorial autonomy, using strong judgment to maintain scholarly standards and tone.
    • Coordinate publication timelines and article preparation with internal teams.
  • Collaboration & Communication
    • Work closely with the developer of FQxI’s online platform to ensure a smooth and high-quality publishing process—from formatting and metadata to final display.

    • Represent the review series publicly as needed, including at virtual or in-person academic events.
    • Coordinate with FQxI’s Chief Operations Officer, Chief Scientific Officer, Website Editor, and technical developers to meet grant requirements.
Qualifications
  • Required Qualifications
    • PhDs, Postdocs, and others with commensurate research experience in physics, mathematical physics, or a closely related discipline, with a strong grasp of foundational questions in science.
    • Demonstrated editorial or scholarly writing experience, preferably involving review or conceptual synthesis.
    • Ability to work independently and proactively, managing complex editorial workflows with minimal supervision.
    • Strong communication skills, particularly in guiding authors constructively through revision.
    • Comfortable collaborating with a technical developer and learning basic workflows related to digital publication.
    • Proven experience in managing complex projects autonomously, balancing collaboration with independent decision-making.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience in commissioning content and managing peer review.
    • Familiarity with open science practices and interdisciplinary scholarship.
    • Prior involvement with FQxI is not required; however, participation with scholarly initiatives similar to FQxI may be beneficial.
