Technical Manager - Automotive and Industrial

Join to apply for the Technical Manager - Automotive and Industrial role at Canonical.

We have created a role for a Technical Manager, Automotive and Industrial with a passion for open source and precision engineering. Today, Canonical provides secure and reliable products to our industrial and automotive partners. Our solutions bridge open-source innovation with industry-specific requirements, including stringent certification processes. Our goal is to enable industries such as automotive to leverage our open source portfolio, from the factory to the cloud, supporting automotive innovation with the most secure and advanced platform.

Your role will include leading a team of dedicated engineers to adapt our products to automotive and industrial requirements. You will represent Canonical and Ubuntu in the industrial and automotive community and standards consortia. You will ensure our Linux distribution and products support standards related to processes, cyber-security, and safety, such as IEC 61508, ISO9001, ISO 21434, UNECE R155 & R156, ISO26262 (from B to D), and ASPICE. Additionally, you will work on enhancing delivery quality, security, and developer experience, leading and influencing culture, strategy, and execution. You will report to the Vice President of Engineering Excellence and collaborate with the Automotive Product Manager on vision and roadmap development.

Location : This is a globally remote role.

What you'll do

  • Refine the vision and strategy for automotive at Canonical with Product Management.
  • Define and execute an engineering roadmap for the automotive team.
  • Represent Ubuntu and Canonical in the automotive community, including customers, partners, and consortia.
  • Lead our Linux distribution and open source software strategy in automotive.
  • Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers, guiding their work.
  • Develop skills through coaching, feedback, and technical leadership.
  • Manage expectations with other engineering teams, management, and external stakeholders.
  • Promote modern, agile software development practices.
  • Develop and evangelize best engineering and organizational practices.
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  • Work remotely with international travel twice a year, up to two weeks each time.

Who you are

  • Strong background in software engineering, Linux, and open source.
  • Deep knowledge of Linux packages and embedded development.
  • Familiarity with automotive and industry standards (ISO21434, ISO26262, SOTIF, IEC 61508) and experience leading compliant product development.
  • Proficiency in C / C++ and Python programming.
  • Practical experience in automotive, including functional safety, embedded systems, and cloud software trends.
  • Experience leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software developers.
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality, timely software.
  • Passion for developing and growing people.
  • Experience working in an agile environment.
