Technical Design Manager, Utility Scale Energy Storage | Milan | Hybrid | Competitive Salary + Bonus & Benefits

We’re looking for a Milan-based Technical Design Manager to support our Grid and Project Development teams across a growing portfolio of utility scale energy storage and renewable projects in Italy and wider Europe. With Italy’s storage market accelerating on the back of Terna’s MACSE scheme, this is a chance to shape some of the country’s most significant BESS projects. You’ll join a highly capable Renewable Project Development team in a flexible, collaborative environment where everyone is aligned behind the company’s growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead all aspects of power system network design, including grid connection applications and negotiations with Terna and DSOs, and support technical and financial optimisation through to financial close and beyond
• Lead engineering feasibility studies and drive value engineering to optimise design solutions
• Support the design of large scale energy storage plants, including equipment sizing and ratings, technical specifications and general design (SLDs, layouts, etc.)
• Review and, where appropriate, challenge EPC and BoP contractor design and engineering deliverables
• Carry out power and electrical system studies, including performance assessments for design assurance and transient and dynamic stability studies
• Develop power system network design from 380kV down to LV to support engineering design and business decision making
• Ensure designs comply with Italian grid code requirements (Terna Codice di Rete, Allegato A.17, CEI 0-16)
• Provide technical and techno-economic analysis to support Business Development and Procurement teams on tenders, including MACSE auctions
• Support Project Delivery teams through basic and detailed design, construction and commissioning
• Review key engineering deliverables produced by third party consultants and contractors
• Own technical design standards and best practice, using tools such as BIM, 3D CAD and Digital Twins

What You’ll Bring

• Proven experience in electrical network design with a strong understanding of power system engineering; renewable system design experience is a strong advantage
• A solid grasp of power system and renewable connection design from HV down to site LV, including AIS and GIS substations, grid-forming inverters and control systems
• Understanding of the Italian transmission and distribution network and Terna connection processes
• Knowledge of design requirements for electrical equipment within energy storage and renewable installations, including equipment interference, blast and fire safety, and access and egress for installation and O&M
• Experience with software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, BIM 360, Revit and AutoCAD 3D
• Experience in engineering, system planning or consultancy within the energy sector (B2B), ideally in energy storage or renewables
• Project management experience, including budgeting and engineering capex management, is advantageous
• Fluent Italian and English
