Role Description
We are looking for a Special Machines Mechanical Engineer who will collaborate on the Lead Fast Reactor (LFR) design activities and experimental facilities, focusing on the mechanical design of complex machines, mechanisms, and robotics applications with particular reference, but not limited to, operation in molten lead or extreme environmental conditions.

Main Activities

  1. Ensure the execution of design activities for special machines in the field of LFR, in accordance with best engineering practices, also exploring innovative solutions to technical challenges and problems.
  2. Participate in the definition of the operative sequence of operations.
  3. Develop the design of bespoke components/mechanisms, from concept up to detail facing the mechanical aspects in an integrated way with automation and electrical aspects.
  4. Review the 3D model internal and external interfaces within a BIM context and PLM system.
  5. Participate in the definition of the methodologies for stress analysis of bespoke mechanical components/mechanisms according to the applicable construction code by using Finite Element Modelling.
  6. Contribute to the drafting of the purchasing technical documentation for component supply.
  7. Technical evaluation and alignment of manufacturer bids for the supply of equipment.
  8. Preparation and participation in kick-off meetings, review meetings, design meetings, and studies.
  9. Ensure that equipment manufacturers are delivering in accordance with the defined design and manage non-conformities. Supervise expediting.
  10. Verify the technical correctness of the engineering documents produced when the task is delegated by the Line Manager.
  11. Contribute to the development and update of newcleo's General Specifications and standard procedures in the discipline.
  12. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  13. Coordinate assigned work with other technical personnel as directed.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Degree in Mechanical/Mechatronics/Robotics Engineering. Master or PhD is a plus.
  2. Fluent in Italian and English. French is a plus.
  3. Experience of engineering aspects related to design, prototyping, fabrication, and assembly of bespoke components/mechanisms and complex machines.
  4. Knowledge about the commercially available components to be part of the bill of materials (e.g., motors, gears, sensors, etc.), with particular reference to extreme environments (high temperature, presence of radiations).
  5. Experience in the application of specific codes and standards for lifting equipment (e.g., NUREG, FEM, RCC-MRX and/or EURO codes) is a plus.
  6. Knowledge of ANSYS Mechanical and Multiphysics for Structural Analysis purposes, SolidWorks for 3D/2D Modelling are also an asset.
  7. Knowledge and/or experience of fabrication aspects, understanding of welding and non-destructive testing topics on complex machines is a plus.
  8. Experience in a nuclear or other highly regulated environment and good understanding of safety aspects would be a definite advantage.
  9. Extensive knowledge of QA systems and their practical application.
  10. Not more than/At least 5 years' experience (depending on seniority Junior/Senior) in an Engineering Unit at any industrial mechanical design company specializing in machine design and manufacturing.
