We seek engineering managers passionate about operational systems, open source technologies, and cutting-edge hardware to lead teams in enabling and optimizing Ubuntu for the latest x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x, and POWER systems.

In this role, you will partner with leading silicon vendors to optimize Ubuntu on their platforms, integrating new features and ensuring a consistent user experience. You should be an outstanding developer, capable of reviewing patches and design specs, driving engineering practices, documentation, quality, and performance improvements. You will also manage your team’s career development, represent your team technically, and collaborate across teams and with customers.

This is a globally remote role, with open positions in every time zone.

What your day will look like

  1. Lead and develop a team of engineers from graduate to senior levels
  2. Oversee project delivery and support customer engagements
  3. Lead complex system architecture projects
  4. Implement disciplined engineering processes
  5. Maintain platform software stacks
  6. Optimize Ubuntu for new hardware platforms
  7. Display technical leadership internally and externally
  8. Participate in code reviews and documentation
  9. Collaborate with leadership teams

What we are looking for in you

  • Strong academic background from high school and university
  • Degree in Computer Science or STEM, or an alternative compelling story
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python
  • Experience with Linux and systems software (kernel or user space)
  • Experience with Debian / Ubuntu or other distros
  • Leadership experience in software engineering
  • Professional English communication skills
  • Confidence in sharing ideas and feedback
  • Thoughtfulness and self-motivation
  • Results-driven with a commitment to meet goals
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks

Nice-to-have skills

  • Experience with open source communities and licenses
  • Knowledge of x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x architectures
  • Understanding build systems and cross-compilation
  • Customer engagement experience
  • Board bring-up and validation skills
  • Experience with Linux virtualization, networking, or graphics stacks
  • Knowledge of Docker / OCI, K8s, confidential computing, RDMA, Infiniband, HPC
  • Performance engineering, benchmarking, profiling
