The Devices team is seeking a talented, self-directed Software Development Engineer to join a team responsible for a wide array of impactful speech and language applications in multiple languages. These applications enable thousands of customers to interact with Alexa in the most natural way possible by building and enhancing NLU models.

Key job responsibilities

• Responsible for on-call duties during peak and non-peak hours, deploying fixes, and handling high-severity issues with Language Engineers and Scientists.
• Collaborate with team members (Data Scientists, Research Scientists, Language Engineers, SDEs, BIEs, Product and Program Managers) to investigate design approaches, prototype new technology, and evaluate technical feasibility.
• Improve the reliability of tools and fill tooling gaps opportunistically.
• Work in an Agile/Scrum environment to deliver high-quality software against tight schedules.

About the team

The team is based in Turin (IT), with peer teams in Bangalore (IN) and Boston (US). Turin offers a vibrant environment with world-class automotive, aerospace, and banking companies, low housing costs, and recreational opportunities from opera to the Italian Riviera, wine regions like Barolo, and mountain sports in the Olympic Mountains.

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Experience in software development, including design, implementation, debugging, and support of scalable system software and/or services.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Java or Python, with a solid understanding of UNIX/Linux operating systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and identify root causes with a focus on operational excellence.
• Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and design patterns.
• Understanding of professional software engineering practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Interest in improving self-service tools and effectiveness.
• Highly organized with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Fluency in written and spoken English (CEFR B2 level).
• Experience in Systems Engineering and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) in large distributed environments.
• Track record of building and maintaining mission-critical 24x7 production systems.
• Experience with statistical modeling/machine learning and openness to emerging ML and big data applications.
