Reply is seeking a Senior Software Engineer specializing in AI-assisted legacy modernization in Milan. You will modernize critical applications, apply AI to reconstruct logic, and contribute to reusable tooling and agentic workflows.

WHO WE ARE

WHAT YOU WILL FIND

• Core activities. You will modernize business-critical applications, from reverse engineering to code transformation and testing. You will apply AI to reconstruct business logic, support development and validate functional equivalence. You will have the opportunity to help evolve our agentic system that support AI-assisted modernization, by building reusable tools and methods. You will contribute to technical decisions and help colleagues develop their skills.
• Tech & tools stack. Depending on the project, you will work with Java or Python, legacy technologies such as COBOL or RPG, Git, CI/CD and automated testing. You will use AI coding assistants and contribute to agentic workflows for code analysis, documentation, transformation and validation.
• Team work. You will join Reply’s modernization team in Milan, working alongside software engineers, architects and clients’ IT teams on complex enterprise systems, including financial services and industrial applications. You will collaborate closely with technical and business stakeholders, with opportunities to take on broader technical leadership responsibilities. The role combines hybrid working with regular collaboration in person.

WHAT WE NEED

• Academic background.A degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience in software engineering.
• Technical & strategic skills.Hands-on experience in a legacy modernization, application migration or reengineering project, with a clear understanding of your contribution and the outcomes achieved. Strong programming skills in at least one modern language, such as Java, Python or C#, and the ability to understand unfamiliar codebases. Experience analysing business logic, application dependencies and data flows, and using automated tests to verify software behaviour. Practical experience using AI tools for software development, with the ability to review generated code and validate its correctness.
• Soft skills. You are curious about how complex systems work and persistent when solving unfamiliar problems. You take ownership of your work, explain technical choices clearly and collaborate effectively with colleagues and clients. You enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others grow.
• Nice to have. Experience applying AI directly to legacy analysis, documentation, code transformation or test generation. Familiarity with mainframe or IBM i environments, including COBOL or RPG. Experience building agentic workflows or solutions using knowledge graphs and retrieval-augmented generation. Experience mentoring developers or taking ownership of technical workstreams.

The compensation package will be determined based on your professional background, technical skills, expertise, and the level of responsibility associated with the role. The collective labour agreement (CCNL) mainly applied within Reply is the Italian Metalworking Industry Agreement. The job classification will be assessed starting from level B2, and the gross annual salary (RAL) will range from €40,000 to €65,000.
