Senior Process Safety Engineer – Green H2 & Derivatives
The applicant will participate in the development of the company’s green hydrogen and derived e-Fuels projects, focusing on all process safety engineering aspects. You will be responsible for ensuring that the design of all project facilities prioritises safety and minimises risks to stakeholders and the community.
Mission / Objectives
- Design safety installations and participate in the development and review of safety studies (e.g., safety reviews, risk analysis, explosion and blast analysis, CFD modelling, gas detection and measurements) to approve engineering documentation, ensure safe design solutions, and guide safety practices among stakeholders;
- Develop company safety standards considering regulatory requirements and industry best practices, serving as guidelines for engineering teams, contractors, and vendors.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Manage the technical process safety strategy for hydrogen and derivatives plants across all engineering phases, providing guidance to project design teams;
- Conduct qualitative risk assessments based on stakeholder input;
- Preliminarily size fire-fighting facilities, F&G design philosophies, and Hazardous Area Classifications;
- Support decision-making with other technical disciplines regarding equipment, building, and infrastructure safety aspects;
- Prepare documentation for local authorities, including fire and explosion analyses and risk assessments;
- Review and approve safety documentation from third parties, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations;
- Stay updated on technical developments, standards, and legislation to prioritize safety in project design;
- Participate in safety workshops such as HAZOP, SIL/LOPA, HAZID, among others;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in designing safety installations and conducting risk assessments for large-scale oil & gas, petrochemical, or hydrogen facilities;
- Experience with HAZID, HAZOP, SIL assessments, occupational safety, and hazard management;
- Proficiency with software like DNV Phast/Safeti or Gexcon Effects;
- Knowledge of regulations, standards, and industry best practices;
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams on process plant projects;
- Excellent communication skills in English; Portuguese is a plus;
- Experience with hydrogen systems is advantageous;
- Familiarity with safety legislation in Portugal, Spain, Italy, or Germany is a plus;
- Additional language skills (German, Spanish, Italian) are beneficial.
