Senior Process Safety Engineer – Green H2 & Derivatives

The applicant will participate in the development of the company’s green hydrogen and derived e-Fuels projects, focusing on all process safety engineering aspects. You will be responsible for ensuring that the design of all project facilities prioritizes safety and minimizes risks to stakeholders and the community.

Mission / Objectives

  • Design safety installations and develop/review safety studies (e.g., safety reviews, risk analysis, explosion and blast analysis, CFD modelling, gas detection, measurements) to approve engineering documentation, ensure safe design solutions, and guide stakeholders.
  • Develop safety standards aligned with regulatory requirements and industry best practices for project stakeholders, including engineering teams, contractors, and vendors.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  1. Manage process safety strategy for hydrogen and derivatives plants throughout all engineering phases, providing guidance to project teams.
  2. Conduct qualitative risk assessments based on stakeholder input.
  3. Preliminary sizing of fire-fighting facilities, F&G design philosophies, and Hazardous Area Classification.
  4. Support decision-making on safety aspects related to equipment, buildings, and infrastructure during plant design.
  5. Prepare safety documentation for local authorities, including fire and explosion analyses, and risk assessments.
  6. Review and approve safety documentation prepared by third parties, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
  7. Stay updated on technical developments, standards, and legislation to prioritize safety in projects.
  8. Participate in safety workshops such as HAZOP, SIL/LOPA, HAZID, among others.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
  10. Demonstrable 10+ years of experience in safety design and risk assessment of large-scale oil & gas, petrochemical, or hydrogen facilities.
  11. Experience with HAZID, HAZOP, SIL assessments, occupational safety, and hazards management.
  12. Proficiency with software like DNV Phast/Safeti or Gexcon Effects.
  13. Knowledge of regulations, standards, and industry practices.
  14. Experience working in multidisciplinary teams on process plant projects.
  15. Excellent English communication skills; Portuguese is a plus.
  16. Hydrogen systems experience is advantageous.
  17. Familiarity with safety legislation in Portugal, Spain, Italy, or Germany is a plus.
  18. Additional language skills (German, Spanish, Italian) are beneficial.
