Job description

Help shape the future of renewable energy in Italy as a Senior Portfolio Manager. You will drive key commercial and investment decisions across a growing portfolio of renewable energy projects while working closely with development, finance, and technical teams. Join a dynamic international company where your impact will be visible from day one.

European Energy is a growing company in the renewable energy sector. We are a privately owned Danish company founded in 2004, with our headquarters in Copenhagen. We develop, construct, and operate solar (PV) and wind energy projects globally, as well as Power-to-X projects. In addition, we explore new technologies, including battery energy storage, biogas, and carbon capture. As part of this, we are highly active in M&A activities across the entire value chain. Our core values form the foundation of everything we do: In It Together, Trust and Courage, Ambition, Excitement, Inclusion, and Agility.

Your New Team

You will join European Energy Italy, a team of approximately 15 colleagues based primarily at our Milan office. In this role, you will work closely with the development, engineering, grid, permitting, energy markets, and finance teams, acting as the person who challenges assumptions and turns pipeline data into clear go/no-go and prioritization decisions.

Your New Role

As our new Senior Portfolio Manager, you will own the financial and commercial view of our Italian development pipeline. You will make sure every project, whether developed in-house or brought in through co-development and acquisition agreements, has a robust business case, realistic assumptions and commercial terms that reflect its true value and risk.

Your Responsibilities

Financial Review of the Pipeline

  • Run periodic financial reviews of the Italian pipeline across solar PV, onshore wind, BESS and hybrid projects.
  • Take the lead in preparing project cash flows and project budgets, working with the individual Project Managers to collect and harmonize assumptions, and to discuss and validate the strategy behind each project.
  • Build, maintain and review the project screening model, the tool used during development and up to FID to identify, optimize and assess current projects and new opportunities: Capex, Opex, energy yield, revenue stack (merchant, PPA, capacity market, MACSE, CfD/FER-X), financing and tax assumptions.
  • Take an active role in assessing hybrid opportunities (e.g. PV + BESS, wind + PV, agrivoltaics), correctly modelling how the technologies coexist, including shared grid capacity, curtailment and dispatch, and the related revenue stacking.
  • Run sensitivity and scenario analyses (IRR, NPV, LCOE, payback) to identify the key value drivers and risks of each project.
  • Review and optimize technical, permitting, grid and market assumptions together with the relevant specialists, and document the rationale behind each business case.

Business Case Improvement

  • Work with development, engineering and energy markets colleagues to find levers that improve project economics: layout and technology choices, hybridization, grid solutions, route-to-market and timing.
  • Support prioritization, pipeline segmentation and go / no-go decisions at each development milestone, and support in the preparation of investment committee materials.

Commercial Negotiation with Developers

  • Lead or support the renegotiation of terms with third-party developers when project assumptions, timelines or risk profiles change.

Pipeline Tools and Reporting

  • Support the team in designing and improving pipeline review tools, dashboards and standard model templates.
  • Track and keep up to date all key project information: status, milestones, capex, valuation, contractual obligations and payment schedules.
  • Produce regular portfolio reporting for local and group management.

Prerequisites to Progress in the Job

  • 5+ years of experience in renewable energy, in roles such as portfolio management, investment, M&A, project finance, transaction advisory or business development with strong financial focus.
  • Hands-on experience building and auditing project finance models in Excel, including sensitivities and scenario analysis.
  • Solid understanding of the Italian renewables market: permitting, grid connection, incentive schemes and route-to-market options.
  • Proven commercial and negotiation skills, ideally in dealings with developers, landowners or counterparties.
  • Ability to challenge assumptions constructively and explain complex economics clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Fluent Italian and English, written and spoken (both mandatory).

We Offer

  • Close collaboration with senior colleagues and meaningful deal ownership from day one.
  • A culture of knowledge sharing and international collaboration across 21+ countries.
  • Flexible work policy and a diverse, inclusive work environment.
  • Opportunities for career advancement in a growing company and sector.
