Job summary

Ciena is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer in Lombardy to develop robust mechanical, thermal, and opto-mechanical solutions for photonic integrated circuits and optical modules. You will work with photonics, electrical, and software teams from concept through high-volume production to ensure accuracy and manufacturability.

The role emphasizes GD&T, tolerance analysis, and thermal management, with a focus on scalable manufacturing and process qualification.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• 3+ years hands-on experience in mechanical design and thermal simulations.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and engineering drawings, including GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Strong understanding of heat transfer, thermal expansion, and material properties.
• Experience with thermal and structural analysis tools to guide design decisions.

Responsibilities

• Develop mechanical and thermal solutions for enclosures and interfaces integrating photonic and electronic hardware.
• Perform thermal simulations to optimise heat dissipation and temperature stability.
• Conduct tolerance stack-up analyses to ensure proper alignment and assembly.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across optical, hardware, electrical, and software domains.
• Design and optimise mechanical fixtures and tooling for calibration and manufacturing scale-up.
