School-Supported Self-Taught Language A Tutors

The College seeks collaborators with IB DP teaching experience for the position of School-Supported Self-Taught Language A tutors.

The United World College of the Adriatic, located in Duino, Italy, is an international school where students aged 16 to 19 from over 80 countries undertake the rigorous IB Diploma programme. Emphasizing the cultural and linguistic diversity of its student body aligns with the philosophy of Kurt Hahn, founder of the UWC movement.

Many candidates study literature in their native language and are offered instruction in Literature in Translation, along with support in text analysis, commentary, and essay-writing skills. To enhance support, the College is looking for virtual Language A: Literature tutors.

We are seeking independent collaborators with IB DP teaching experience to fill these roles in the following languages: Albanian, Amharic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Japanese, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Marathi, Modern Greek, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Siswati, Slovak, Turkish, and Ukrainian.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

The online Language A tutor is responsible for supporting candidates by:

  • Assisting students in selecting a balanced booklist meeting IB requirements or creating an individual list for a Special Request Language A;
  • Sharing relevant materials such as notes, readings, critical articles, samples, and interviews;
  • Providing professional advice for the Individual Oral preparation and delivery;
  • Advising on Paper 1 text analysis and Paper 2 essays; developing skills in text analysis, oral and written commentary, and essay writing;
  • Giving feedback on assessments including Paper 1 analysis, Paper 2 essays, mock oral exams, and trial exams;
  • Grading these assessments and providing predicted grades to the SSST coordinator.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Preferably a teaching qualification and experience in IB DP Language A: Literature;
  • Excellent oral and written skills in the language of instruction;
  • Experience working with youth aged 16-19 from diverse backgrounds;
  • Access to a computer with internet for virtual meetings.

The Language A: Literature tutor will be contracted as a self-employed professional, offering approximately 30 hours of online teaching, typically 10 hours in the first year and 20 hours in the second year, leading up to IB and trial exams. Tutoring can commence once applicants are selected and continue until May 2024. Compensation is €50 per hour, payable upon invoice at the end of May 2024, with billing scheduled from September 2024 to May 2025.
