The American Academy in Rome invites applications for a distinguished humanities scholar to serve as the Andrew W. Mellon Humanities Professor. This three-year appointment, renewable for up to two additional years, begins August 2027.

The professor collaborates with senior leadership to guide Rome Prize Fellows and oversee key programs in Rome and beyond. Responsibilities include mentoring Fellows, coordinating with the Director and Arts Director, and leading the Classical Summer School and

Competenze

• A PhD in a humanities discipline with a record of published scholarship and standing.
• Ability to engage across disciplines and design and lead programs.
• Fluency in spoken and written Italian is essential.
• Strong knowledge of Rome's artistic, archaeological and cultural sites.

• Serve as a primary intellectual resource for Rome Prize Fellows across humanities disciplines.
• Foster intellectual exchange across disciplines and mentor Fellows at various career stages.
• Facilitate relationships with Roman and Italian academic and cultural life.
• Design and lead site visits and trips around Rome, Italy, and the Mediterranean.
• Participate in Rome Prize and Italian Fellows selections as needed.
• Conduct research and model scholarly life for Fellows.
• Contribute to programming with the Director and Arts Director.
• Serve as staff liaison to relevant committees and Managing Editor of Memoirs.
• Oversee the Classical Summer School and archaeology initiatives.
• Attend meetings with organizations where the Academy holds seats.
