Canonical is hiring a Design Manager to lead and grow our visual design practice, guiding brand and site experiences across digital touchpoints. This hands‑on leadership role suits designers who excel in people management, delivery ownership, and strategic thinking.

You will manage a team of visual designers, shape design systems, collaborate with Marketing, Web Engineering and Design Systems, and drive cross‑department projects.

Qualifications

• A portfolio demonstrating excellence in leading design process and execution (especially visually) in diverse organisations.
• Experience managing complex projects and a team of designers while remaining actively involved in design work.
• Advanced knowledge of visual design principles (typography, layout, colour, systems) demonstrating broad experience.
• Strong processes understanding and ability to manage ambiguity, competing priorities, and limited resources with the ability to switch modes.
• A clear point of view, balanced with openness to critique and feedback with deep care for usability and accessibility.
• Commitment to skills development and mentorship.
• A demonstrable passion for technology.
• Thoughtful and self-motivated while being result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments.
• Exceptional educational achievement in design, or a compelling narrative about your alternative chosen path.
• Professional written and spoken English.
• Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events up to two weeks long.

Responsabilités

• Lead a team of visual designers and drive design excellence across brand and site work.
• Review work critically and provide constructive feedback to ensure consistency.
• Contribute hands-on design work when needed and mentor designers.
• Oversee and improve operational workflows, including production processes.
• Collaborate with Marketing, Web Engineering and Design Systems Director to validate outcomes.
• Evolve design systems and guidelines to improve quality and efficiency.
• Coordinate with design leadership to mature our practice.
• Foster culture by sharing work and uniting teams.
• Help make the value of design legible across the organization and open source community.
