TrioTech Recruitment is seeking an ESS Project Manager to lead Battery Energy Storage System projects in Italy (Bologna) from opportunity assessment through development, permitting, construction and commissioning. The role requires 3–5 years of storage experience, Italian and English fluency, and strong stakeholder management.

The position is permanent with a Sept start date and a salary range of €60,000 to €75,000.

Competenze

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Renewable Energy, Energy Economics, Environmental Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of professional energy storage project development experience.
  • Strong knowledge of BESS project development in Italy.
  • Good understanding of permitting procedures and construction regulations in Italy.
  • Experience managing complex development projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Understanding of electricity markets and BESS revenue streams is desirable.
  • Fluent in Italian and English.
  • Willingness to travel within Italy.

Mansioni

  • Lead and manage BESS projects across development stages from inception to commercial operation.

  • Support handover to construction and transition to execution phase.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of development and PM processes.

Tasks

As Project Manager BESS, you will lead and coordinate Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in Italy throughout the entire project lifecycle, from early-stage opportunity assessment and project acquisition through development, permitting, construction, and commissioning.

You will play a key role in identifying, evaluating, and advancing attractive BESS opportunities while ensuring technical, commercial, regulatory, and financial viability. Working closely with internal development, engineering, commercial, legal, and external stakeholders, you will contribute to building a high-quality and profitable project pipeline in the respective market.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage BESS projects throughout all development stages, from project inception or acquisition to commercial operation.
  • Coordinate and steer project development activities in accordance with country-specific regulations, permitting requirements, and market conditions.
  • Evaluate greenfield and acquisition opportunities, including technical, regulatory, commercial, and financial due diligence.
  • Manage relationships with landowners, authorities, grid operators, consultants, and other key stakeholders.
  • Support and coordinate permitting processes and ensure compliance with applicable national and local regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering team to develop optimal BESS system configurations based on country-specific revenue opportunities and market requirements.
  • Monitor and assess developments in local energy storage markets, revenue streams, capacity mechanisms, ancillary services, and regulatory frameworks for optimization of the relevant business case.
  • Identify and assess relevant tender programs, subsidy schemes, and funding opportunities.
  • Coordinate internal and external advisors, including technical, legal, environmental, tax, and insurance
  • Being able to negotiate with grid operators for the most favorable grid connection conditions to optimize the revenue streams
  • Build up and maintain a network to utilities, grid operators, off-takers and service providers
  • Prepare project reports, development budgets, schedules, and management presentations.
  • Support project handover to construction and ensure a smooth transition into execution phase.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of project development and project management processes.
Requirements
  • University degree (Bachelor's or Master’s) in Engineering, Renewable Energy, Energy Economics, Environmental Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of professional experience in energy storage project development.
  • Strong knowledge of BESS project development processes in Italy.
  • Good understanding of permitting procedures and construction-related regulations in the respective country.
  • Experience managing complex development projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Understanding of electricity markets and BESS revenue streams (capacity markets, balancing services, ancillary services, wholesale markets) is highly desirable.
  • Ability to assess project opportunities and conduct technical and commercial project evaluations.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and external consultants.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Fluent in Italian and English.
  • Willingness to travel within the country as required.
