THE ROLE

You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where junior and senior scientists collaborate, each with their expertise, to carry out a scientific activity with a shared research goal.

The Nanochemistry Research Unit coordinated by Prof. Liberato Manna at IIT in Genoa is seeking highly motivated and talented candidates in the field of photoelectrocatalysis. The successful candidate will contribute to the rational design, synthesis, and testing of advanced photo- and electrocatalysts, with particular focus on nanocrystalline materials and their integration into functional electrodes. The position involves the development of new photoelectrocatalytic setups (batch and/or flow), implementation of analytical methodologies for the detection and quantification of reaction products, and the use of in-situ spectroscopic tools to gain mechanistic insights into catalytic pathways and material evolution. The postdoc will closely interact with synthetic chemists and computational scientists within the team to accelerate the discovery of efficient catalytic systems, and will provide support and guidance to other postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduates. The highly interdisciplinary research environment at IIT provides access to cutting-edge laboratories for materials synthesis and characterization, as well as advanced facilities for electrochemical and spectroscopic investigations.

Within the research team, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Design and development of photo/electrocatalysts in close collaboration with the synthesis and computational teams
  • Construction and optimization of photoelectrocatalytic setups (batch and/or flow), testing of catalysts, development of analytical methodologies for product quantification, and in-situ spectroscopic studies to elucidate catalytic mechanisms and catalyst evolution
  • Report to the group on the progress of your research activities and mentoring students

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or related fields, and/or a related subject
  • Experience in inorganic synthesis, nanocrystal synthesis, and a particular focus on the application of such materials in the field of photo/electrocatalysis.
  • Strong publication record
  • Fluency in English is essential
  • The successful candidate should have good practice with teamwork, group learning processes and a problem-solving attitude
  • Good command of spoken and written English
  • The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Experience in hands-on development of photoelectrocatalytic setups and methods for the analysis of reaction products
  • Knowledge of data analysis and software for photoelectrochemical studies
  • Ability to work in a challenging and international environment
  • Capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment
  • Possess analytical reasoning skills and a growth mindset

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

  • A yearly gross salary ranging between 38.000 and 42.000 euro
  • Private health care coverage depending on your role and contract
  • Candidates from abroad or Italian citizens who have carried scientific research activity permanently abroad and meet specific requirements, may be entitled to a deduction from taxable income of up to 90% from 6 to 13 years.

This open position is financed by the European Union – European Research Council within the project 'Nanoscale Epitaxial Heterostructures Involving Metal Halides – NEHA', Grant Agreement n° 101095974
