Job summary

NHOA Energy is seeking a PCS Firmware R&D Engineer to design, develop and maintain embedded firmware for microcontroller-based power conversion systems. You will implement drivers, integrate control algorithms and support on-site commissioning with cross-functional teams.

You must have an MSc in a related field and at least 2 years of embedded firmware experience, with strong C/C++ skills and familiarity with real-time debugging. English and Italian communication required.

Qualifications

• MSc in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering or related field.
• At least 2 years of embedded firmware experience, preferably for inverters or PCS.
• Strong C/C++ skills and embedded systems knowledge.
• Proficient with microcontrollers, peripherals and comms protocols.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain embedded firmware for microcontroller-based PCS.
• Develop peripheral drivers and communication interfaces (ADC, PWM, sensors, buses).
• Integrate control algorithms and auto-generated code into firmware platforms.
• Create tools for PCS testing, configuration, data logging and communication.
• Perform firmware debugging, testing and validation on targets and test benches.
• Support firmware releases, version control, and documentation per standards.
• Collaborate with R&D and Commissioning teams during system integration and testing.
• Leverage AI-assisted tools to improve coding efficiency and processes.

Position

NHOA Energy is looking for a PCS Firmware R&D Engineer to join our R&D team.

What you’ll do

• Design, develop and maintain embedded firmware for microcontroller‑based power conversion systems, ensuring real‑time performance and reliability.
• Develop peripheral drivers and communication interfaces (ADC, PWM, sensors, protection systems and communication buses).
• Integrate control algorithms and auto‑generated code into embedded firmware platforms.
• Develop supporting software tools for PCS testing, configuration, communication and data logging.
• Perform firmware debugging, functional testing and validation on embedded targets and real PCS test benches.
• Support firmware releases, version control, documentation and compliance with international coding standards.
• Collaborate with R&D and Commissioning teams during system integration, testing and on‑site commissioning activities.
• Leverage AI‑assisted development tools to improve coding efficiency and development processes.

Requirements

• MSc in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience in embedded firmware development, ideally for inverters or Power Conversion Systems.
• Strong programming skills in C/C++ and solid knowledge of embedded systems.
• Hands‑on experience with microcontrollers, peripheral drivers and communication protocols.
• Good understanding of real‑time firmware development, debugging and testing.
• Good communication skills in both English and Italian.
• Analytical mindset, problem‑solving attitude and ability to work in cross‑functional teams.

Nice to have

• Experience with Linux environments and ST microcontrollers.
• Knowledge of VHDL programming for Xilinx SoC platforms.
• Familiarity with HIL testing platforms such as RTDS, Typhoon HIL or OPAL-RT.
• Understanding of inverter‑based resources, synchronous generator control and grid‑forming technologies.

Other information

Location: Hybrid remote and Cosio Valtellino (SO) Offices
Or Milan Offices: Willingness to travel monthly to the Cosio Valtellino test facility for firmware validation, with occasional travel abroad.
