Organisation / Company Università degli Studi di Verona Department Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures Is the Hosting related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No
Anna Giustinvites scholars to present expressions of interest in applying jointly with the Department of Foreign Languages and Literaturesfor a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) in / on Music studies in the former Russian Empire and/or the Soviet Union.
The theme of national identity and self-definition has become particularly urgent after the beginning of Russia’s invasion to Ukraine in 2022. Aside from political ranks and institutions, it has always been present in the cultural discourse, and in this sphere, the field of operatic theatre has been central, notably in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The image of Russianness and the representation of other Slavic nations offered by scenic-music performances and the discourse surrounding them can be seen as a litmus test for the cultural policies of communities and individuals within such multilingual and multiethnic State entities as the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. We encourage projects dealing with issues related to the theme of national identity in the frame of operatic theatre.
Hosting research group / Supervisor
We are looking for applicants for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship to be presented with our Centre / Department as main host institution.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures promotes research, education, and diffusion of knowledge in foreign languages and literatures, particularly Chinese, French, English, German, Russian, and Spanish, as well as Brazilian Portuguese, and Catalan.
The Department is characterized by a high level of interdisciplinarity and international outlook in both teaching and research.
The field of Slavic studies is committed to a critical approach towards the history of culture in Russia and other Slavic countries, viewed also through the prism of performing arts. Among the scholars who work in this field, Anna Giust dedicates her research to the study of the Russian operatic repertoire as a vehicle for interpreting the history of the culture of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union in its relations with European culture. She is interested in musical relations between Europe and Russia – notably in reference to the reception of Italian and French opera and of the mobility of artists towards Russia. She has written many articles on Russian opera from the 18th to the 21st century, as well as three monographs: "Ivan Susanin" di Catterino Cavos, Un'opera russa prima dell'Opera russa (Turin 2011), Cercando l'opera russa, La formazione di una coscienza nazionale nel teatro musicale del Settecento (Milan 2014), and La forza dell’amore, dell’odio e del destino,Verdi e l’opera italiana in Russia (Parma 2024).
Anna Giust is particularly interested in widening research on Russian music in the Italian territory, but if candidates demonstrate deep knowledge of the language and culture of other speaking countries, she will be open to supporting equally relevant projects in other linguistic (Slavic) areas. Previous competence in Italian language is not necessary, although the candidate is expected to take active part in the department life, and therefore a positive attitude to the possibility of developing communication skills in Italian are welcome.
