The University of Verona invites scholars to present expressions of interest in applying jointly with Prof. Maria Bencivenga for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) on innovative gastric cancer treatments.
Gastric cancer (GC) ranks as the 5th most common malignancy and the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The prognosis for GC is poor, especially in advanced stages, with a 5-year survival rate below 30%. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is a common metastasis associated with poor prognosis. Despite rapid treatment advancements, outcomes remain limited due to complex tumor microenvironment and drug resistance.
The candidate will contribute to developing innovative treatments for GC through:
The main host institution is the Department of Surgery, Dentistry, Pediatrics and Gynecology. The department includes the Health Innovation Factory (HIF), which supports researchers in translational oncology, regenerative medicine, and surgical innovations including AI-assisted robotic surgery. HIF is integrated with facilities like ARC-NET biobank and the Technological Platform Centre, providing advanced instrumentation for biomedical research. The Laboratory of Translational Medicine, part of the University Laboratory of Medical Research (LURM), focuses on translational biomedical research with expertise in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, and bioinformatics.
Associate Professor in General Surgery, Prof. Bencivenga specializes in multimodal surgical treatments and minimally invasive techniques for gastric and oesophageal cancer, including robotics. She has extensive experience in clinical and pre-clinical research and mentorship.
Selected candidates will receive academic and administrative support from the Department and the University of Verona Grant Office for proposal preparation.
Candidates must meet the criteria of the 2025 MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship call:
