Specialization in Anesthesia and Intensive Care / General Surgery / Internal Medicine, experience in Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) and fellowship-level training.

The Medical Training Officer (MTO) within the Field Operations Department (FOD) plays a pivotal role in coordinating and supervising medical training across all projects .

BACKGROUND AND ORGANISATION OF WORK

This position focuses on supporting field-based training personnel, ensuring the implementation of standardized educational programs, and fostering continuous professional development among healthcare staff. The MTO collaborates closely with the Medical Training Consultant (MTC) to align training initiatives with organizational goals and field realities.

This position requires a dynamic individual capable of bridging the main office and field operations, ensuring that training programs are effectively coordinated, standardized, and responsive to the unique challenges of each project location.

The Medical Training Officer will report directly to the Medical Training Consultant. The definition of training objectives and programs will be determined by the Medical Training Consultant and the Scientific Director, in close collaboration with EMERGENCY’s Medical Coordination Unit.

The Medical Training Officer will be based at the main office with regular visits to field projects in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Sudan, and Uganda.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordination of Training Programs

  • Oversee the implementation of the Emergency Educational Program (EMR-PGME) across all field projects, ensuring consistency and alignment with organizational standards.
  • Collaborate with field-based training officers to adapt curricula to local contexts, emphasizing the principle “We teach what we do.”

Support and Supervision of Field Training Personnel

  • Provide guidance and support to field training officers, assisting in the development and execution of training activities.
  • Conduct regular field visits to assess training needs, monitor program effectiveness, and offer on-site support.

Curriculum Development and Implementation

  • Support the implementation and contextual adaptation of curricula developed by the MTC and the Scientific Director, focusing on essential skills and training objectives, ensuring alignment with national standards and field-specific requirements.
  • Implement diverse educational methodologies, including active learning, bedside teaching, and problem-based learning, to enhance training effectiveness.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Establish systems to collect and analyze data on training activities, including formative and summative assessments, to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on training outcomes and impact, informing strategic planning and decision-making.

Interdepartmental Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Facilitate the sharing of training strategies and materials across various departments and projects, promoting a cohesive educational approach.
  • Engage with academic authorities, both locally and internationally, to foster partnerships and enhance training programs.

Resource Management

  • Oversee the development and selection of educational resources and materials, ensuring they meet the evolving demands of field training.
  • Manage the allocation of training resources, including materials and technologies, to maximize program efficacy.

Trainer Development and Succession Planning

  • Collaborate with the MTC to develop and implement succession plans for trainers and tutors, ensuring sustainable capacity building and training quality.
  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for trainers to enhance their instructional skills.

Advisory Role

  • Offer expert advice to the MTC and Medical Coordinators on trainee duties, supervision levels, and the balance between rest and study time to optimize learning and well-being.
  • Stay updated on the latest medical practices, technologies, and educational methodologies to inform training strategies.

Promotion of Continuous Learning and Development

  • Advocate for a culture of lifelong learning among healthcare workers, encouraging continuous professional development and skill enhancement.
  • Implement innovative training methods and research new approaches suitable for humanitarian medical care.

Budget Management and Strategic Planning

  • Contribute to the management of the training budget, in coordination with the MTC and relevant departments, ensuring efficient resource allocation to maximize program impact.
  • Engage with key stakeholders to ensure that training strategies are comprehensive and collaborative, aligning with organizational goals and community needs.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Specialization in Anesthesia and Intensive Care. Alternatively, a specialization in General Surgery or Internal Medicine would also be suitable.
  • Experience in Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) and fellowship-level training.
  • Good knowledge of English language (C1).
  • Commitment and willingness to understand EMERGENCY’s approach, adapting to the specific context of our hospitals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
