We are hiring a Lead Data Governance Engineer focused on data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring in compliance with internal policies and regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, DPA, ISO). The successful candidate will develop Python-based tools to automate internal data mesh operations such as data labeling and quality metrics, adhering to data, access management, and security best practices.

The Data Governance team in the Commercial Systems unit aims to enable secure and well-governed access to comprehensive data sets from various sources within a data mesh. The team works with open-source tools like Trino and Ranger, defines data governance processes, and democratizes data at Canonical.

Location : This role is remote within the EMEA region.

Responsibilities include:

  • Define, monitor, and enforce data governance policies
  • Design, implement, and maintain tooling for automated data mesh operations
  • Deploy and operate team-developed services
  • Mentor and coach team members, offering career development feedback
  • Promote best engineering and organizational practices

Ideal candidate profile:

  • Strong academic background from high school and university
  • Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience
  • Proven track record of exceeding expectations
  • Experience with data quality, governance, and security tools and processes
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL development
  • Excellent English communication and presentation skills
  • Result-driven with personal motivation to meet commitments
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks

Nice-to-have skills:

  • Experience in performance engineering and security
  • Knowledge of Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino
