Epassi in Milan is looking for a Software Engineer (Java) to design and deliver backend services powering its Europe-wide platform. You will own microservices end-to-end, ship reliable APIs, and collaborate with mobile and web teams in a hybrid working setup.

The role requires 3+ years of backend Java experience, Spring Boot, REST/OpenAPI, and hands-on AWS and Docker knowledge. Fluent Italian and English are expected as you join a global engineering community.

We are currently hiring a Software Engineer (Java) based in Milan (hybrid work).

Your mission at Epassi

You will report to the Head of Engineering Italy and join a backend engineering team. You'll own your service areas end-to-end - from design through to production and collaborate closely with mobile and web engineers to ship features that are reliable, well-documented, and built to last.

This is a hands-on technical role for someone who takes quality seriously, integrates well into a team, and doesn't need close supervision to deliver. Your work will directly power Epassi's B2C consumer and B2B merchant platforms.

Your responsibilities will be:

• Build and maintain Java-based microservices that power both the B2C and B2B platforms, following API-first principles
• Deliver features end-to-end, from implementation through testing and release
• Design clean, well-documented REST APIs consumed by web and mobile clients, with backward compatibility and versioning discipline
• Align on API contracts, data models, and integration patterns early in the development cycle
• Write unit and integration tests that give the team genuine confidence in what you ship
• Own incidents within your service areas, contribute to post-mortems, and follow through on fixes
• Participate actively in code review, maintaining and helping refine team engineering standards
• Identify and address technical debt within your service areas as your confidence in the codebase grows

You’ll be successful in this role if you:

• Deliver features end-to-end without close supervision, fully autonomous on the team's stack within your first 6 - 12 months
• Ship APIs that are well-documented, consistent with team conventions, and require minimal rework after review
• Earn positive feedback from mobile and web engineers - integration issues caught early, not at delivery
• Contribute meaningfully to at least one cross-cutting improvement, whether in testing, observability, tooling, or performance

What you should bring:

• 3+ years of professional backend engineering experience building production services in Java
• Hands-on experience with microservices using Spring Boot or equivalent framework
• Solid understanding of REST API design, including versioning, error handling, and OpenAPI documentation
• Working knowledge of AWS core services in a production context - ECS, Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudWatch
• Familiarity with Docker and containerised deployments
• Experience using AI coding tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude) as a genuine productivity multiplier
• A team-first mindset: you respect established patterns, integrate well, and contribute ideas constructively
