Offer Description

The position is funded within the Horizon Europe project SCALE-it, focusing on applying biotremology techniques for sustainable pest insect control. The successful candidate will investigate vibrational signals in species like Tuta absoluta, Aleurocanthus spiniferus, and Trialeurodes vaporariorum, including recording vibrational emissions, maintaining insect colonies, and conducting laboratory and semi-field experiments. The role involves analyzing vibrational signals, performing statistical data analysis, and producing technical reports.

The candidate will join the Plant Protection Unit at Fondazione Edmund Mach and will have access to specialized laboratories and equipment, especially in biotremology.

Key activities include:

  1. Recording and analyzing vibrational signals using laser vibrometry.
  2. Rearing and maintaining insect colonies.
  3. Designing and conducting disruption experiments in lab and semi-field settings.
  4. Implementing playback experiments with synthesized vibrational signals.
  5. Data analysis and interpretation.
  6. Preparing technical reports and scientific publications.
  7. Collaborating within the team and disseminating findings.
Specific Requirements
  • Master of Science or equivalent in agricultural sciences, natural sciences, biology, ecology, or similar.
  • At least 12 months’ experience in entomology (behavior, ecology, crop protection).
  • English knowledge at EU level B2.

Eligibility and Application Process

Selection Process

Candidates will be scored based on qualifications (max 25 points) and interview (max 75 points). The top 25 candidates will be selected for interviews, which will assess their education, experience, presentation, and specific knowledge in vibrational communication and experimental design. A minimum of 45 points in the interview is required to pass.
