Embedded Software Engineer - Linux Consultant, Lucca

Job Description

Domotz is seeking an experienced Embedded Linux Consultant to assist in rebuilding and modernizing the system image for the Domotz Box platform, which has around 20,000 deployed units.

Responsibilities

1. Analyze the current system image, hardware platform, and deployment constraints.
2. Design and implement a new, stable, and maintainable system image based on an updated Linux kernel and supported OS.
3. Ensure backward compatibility and facilitate smooth transition strategies.
4. Collaborate with internal teams (Network Collector, DevOps) for deployment and upgrades.
5. Document build procedures and operational guides for the new system image.
6. Support planning and validation of OTA (Over-The-Air) mass upgrade strategies.
7. Advise on best practices for maintenance and security patching.

Required Skills and Experience

1. Proven expertise in embedded Linux system development and maintenance.
2. Deep understanding of bootloaders, kernel building, OS image creation, and OTA upgrade mechanisms.
3. Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills at system and kernel level.
4. Ability to produce clear technical documentation.

Preferred Skills

1. Experience migrating devices from legacy systems to modern platforms.
2. Hands-on experience with Ubuntu Core platforms (Core 16, Core 20, Core 22).
3. Familiarity with Ubuntu Core architecture and snap packages.
4. Knowledge of ARM architecture and device-level Linux optimizations.
5. Experience with large-scale IoT or embedded device fleets.
6. Experience rebuilding and validating system images for mass deployment.
7. Ability to document the image build process.
8. Recommendations for OTA upgrade processes and risk mitigation.
9. Support during rollout testing and early production phases (optional).

Additional Details

This is a full-time, fully remote role with flexible working hours. The project duration is estimated to be between one and four months.
