Within the Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO, the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) promotes international cooperation in science for peace and sustainable development.
The main objectives of the Academy are to recognize, support, and promote excellence in scientific research in the South; to provide promising scientists in the South with research facilities; to facilitate contacts between scientists and institutions in the South; to encourage North-South and South-South cooperation; and to promote scientific research on major challenges faced by developing countries.
The incumbent, under the authority of the Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences and guidance of the TWAS Steering Committee and Council, will lead the development, management, and execution of TWAS international scientific cooperation programs, aligned with UNESCO policies and within the approved Programme and Budget (C/5). Responsibilities include coordinating with associated organizations such as OWSD and the Interacademy Partnership, and providing leadership in resource mobilization, strategic planning, and representing TWAS in meetings.
