Director, Site Contracting - EMEA Small Business Units, Rome

This role provides overall management of the clinical site contracting function within AbbVie's small business units (SBUs) across Europe, excluding Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, and Ireland. The focus is on obtaining high-quality, cost-effective, timely, and compliant contracts with clinical site partners to support AbbVie's R&D portfolio. The position aims to facilitate the prompt activation of relevant clinical trial sites and meet strategic R&D requirements, while continuously improving processes to reduce cycle times and enhance productivity.

Responsibilities:
  1. Lead the EMEA SBU team within Global Site Contracting, overseeing subsidiary teams responsible for individual countries or groups, and directly managing site contract managers responsible for negotiations within their territories.
  2. Represent AbbVie in all levels of site partner management and engagement, understanding contract terms and clinical trial budgets, assessing risks and execution strategies.
  3. Ensure contracting process compliance with applicable laws and company policies across R&D, Procurement, Finance, Quality Assurance, Regulatory, and Ethics & Compliance.
  4. Manage, train, and mentor staff, conducting assessments and participating in complex contract negotiations to resolve issues promptly.
  5. Plan resources and prioritize projects to meet timelines, driving process improvements to reduce cycle times, control costs, and improve quality.
  6. Adapt to changing business models affecting clinical trial site execution to ensure pipeline progression.
Qualifications:
  • 11+ years of experience in clinical research support, contract management, pharma finance, business, or legal operations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or business-related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, clinical operations, legal, and regulatory environments.
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams and interactions with R&D, IT, Procurement, Finance, Legal, Quality, and OEC.
  • Proven problem-solving skills at strategic and operational levels, with strong negotiation and communication skills.
  • Leadership experience in motivating teams and delivering results, with personnel management skills.
