We have created a role for a Technical Manager, Automotive and Industrial with a passion for open source and precision engineering. Today, Canonical is providing secure and reliable products to our industrial and automotive partners. Our solutions bridge the gap between open-source innovation and industry-specific requirements, including stringent certification processes. Our goal is to enable industries such as automotive to leverage our open source portfolio, from the factory to the cloud, supporting automotive innovation with the most secure and advanced platform.

Your role involves leading a team of engineers to adapt our products to automotive and industrial requirements. You will represent Canonical and Ubuntu in the industrial and automotive communities and standards consortia, ensuring our Linux distribution and products support standards like IEC 61508, ISO 9001, ISO 21434, UNECE R155 & R156, ISO 26262 (ASIL B to D), and ASPICE. Additionally, you will focus on enhancing delivery quality, security, and developer experience, leading strategy and execution in collaboration with your team. You will report to the Vice President of Engineering Excellence and work closely with the Automotive Product Manager to define and execute the vision and roadmap for automotive at Canonical.

Location: This is a globally remote role.

What you'll do
  1. Work with Product Management to refine the vision and strategy for automotive at Canonical.
  2. Define and execute an engineering roadmap for the automotive team at Canonical.
  3. Represent Ubuntu and Canonical in the automotive community, in front of customers, partners, and consortia.
  4. Lead our Linux distribution and open source software strategy in automotive.
  5. Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers, guiding and overseeing their work.
  6. Develop skills through coaching, feedback, and hands-on technical leadership.
  7. Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  8. Advocate for and implement modern, agile software development practices.
  9. Develop and promote excellent engineering and organizational practices.
  10. Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  11. Work remotely with international travel twice a year, up to two weeks per trip.
Who you are
  1. You have a strong software engineering, Linux, and open source background.
  2. You possess in-depth knowledge of Linux packages and embedded development.
  3. You are familiar with automotive and industry standards such as ISO 21434, ISO 26262, SOTIF, IEC 61508, and have led product development initiatives meeting these standards.
  4. You have experience in C/C++ and Python programming.
  5. You have practical experience in automotive domains, including functional safety, embedded systems, and cloud software trends.
  6. You have led, managed, coached, and mentored software developers.
  7. You have a track record of delivering high-quality software on time.
  8. You are passionate about developing and growing people.
  9. You have experience working in an agile development environment.
