Lead Engineering Role at Canonical

Lead engineering across multiple teams on a large open source Golang project that drives complex, highly concurrent distributed software systems across the world - on Kubernetes, on clouds, and on bare metal. This is an exceptionally challenging role requiring deep insights into the technical stack from kernel and filesystems, through networking, to containers and Kubernetes constructs. As an engineering leadership role, it demands an understanding of team dynamics and high-level software engineering practices. As an engineering director at Canonical, you own both the product and the team, ensuring continual improvement, valuable work, and intellectual satisfaction. You will provide technical leadership and management to challenge and grow your teams, influence culture, facilitate technical delivery, and collaborate on strategy and execution.

What you'll do

1. Build and lead globally distributed teams of engineers through hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback, and career development.
2. Grow and develop new engineering managers to create high-performing teams.
3. Support your teams in delivering technical solutions that meet business needs.
4. Set and manage expectations with internal teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
5. Advocate for and promote modern, agile software development practices.
6. Develop and promote a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
7. Participate actively in the leadership team and collaborate with other organizational leaders.
8. Work from home with up to 20% global travel for internal and external events.
