Key Purpose of Role
Underwrite business in accordance with the business plan and within delegated underwriting authority.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and Planning
- Support the development of the annual business plan for the Underwriting division and ensure delivery of the plan in accordance with stated risk tolerances. Ensure the team’s awareness of the business plan and its context so that they can take appropriate action and make informed decisions.
- Contribute and participate in all meetings to share and develop strategy, knowledge, and best practice.
- Contribute new ideas and concepts to support the development and delivery of the business plan.
Delivery
- Establish and strengthen relationships with brokers, industry bodies, business partners, reinsurers, and colleagues to maximize influence and achieve business objectives.
- Demonstrate understanding of market dynamics and cycles to drive and enhance business performance.
- Continuously develop expertise and technical knowledge through appropriate initiatives.
- Underwrite insurance risks according to the business plan and personal authority, including negotiating rates, terms, and conditions for new and existing business.
- Ensure documentation is produced and issued in accordance with contract certainty requirements.
- Review and analyze the portfolio to identify progress towards business objectives.
- Ensure entries are accurately recorded onto relevant systems promptly, maintaining data quality related to underwriting and exposures.
Policy, Process, and Procedures
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidance.
- Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions, and best practices to minimize risk.
- Apply reinsurance requirements in line with risk tolerances and business plans.
- Demonstrate understanding of regulatory requirements and conduct behaviors aligned with our policies, including Solvency II, fair treatment of customers, and data protection.
People Management
- Manage team resources to meet business requirements.
- Motivate and develop the team through effective leadership and management practices.
- Manage performance according to the company's performance process.
Skills and Experience
- Extensive knowledge of market conditions for specific classes/portfolios.
- Strong understanding of legal and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of Liberty (including Group) underwriting processes and systems.
- Proficiency with relevant software such as Excel and departmental tools.
- Excellent numeracy, literacy, interpersonal, communication, analytical, negotiation, organizational, and prioritization skills.
- Ability to analyze data for decision-making and attention to detail.
- Significant experience in the insurance industry, especially with risk profiling, pricing tools, and loss models.
- Established relationships with customers and brokers.
