Acting as the regional subject matter expert, you'll lead equipment assessments, identify compliance gaps, validate remedial actions, and support maintenance teams in delivering a safe, legal, and fully functioning estate for customers, colleagues, and stakeholders.

This is a role for someone who combines strong technical expertise with excellent stakeholder management skills. You'll work across multiple teams to drive equipment compliance, support governance and continuous improvement activities, and ensure PUWER regulations, British Standards, the Machinery Directive, and Tesco policies are consistently applied and embedded throughout the estate.

You will be responsible for
  • Delivering PUWER risk assessments across the Tesco retail estate, inspecting work equipment and identifying compliance gaps, hazards, and remedial requirements.
  • Assessing equipment against PUWER regulatory requirements, including suitability, maintenance, inspection regimes, specific risks, training requirements, guarding, and isolation controls.
  • Producing clear, risk-based assessment reports supported by evidence, priorities, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Acting as a regional technical expert on PUWER, providing compliance advice and practical interpretation to Property, Maintenance, and operational teams.
  • Defining remedial actions and contractor scopes for PUWER-related defects to ensure statutory and Tesco standards are achieved.
  • Maintaining accurate assessment documentation, evidence trails, and audit-ready compliance records.
  • Supporting governance, standardisation, and continuous improvement of PUWER processes, templates, technology, and reporting.
  • Collaborating with Tesco Business Solutions Bengaluru and external suppliers to coordinate assessments, remediation activities, compliance reporting, and documentation management.
  • Supporting investigations involving work equipment through technical expertise, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning.
  • Working closely with the PUWER Assurance Team and responding to auditor feedback to ensure HSG65 standards are maintained.
  • Delivering the PUWER risk assessment programme on time, following agreed business and escalation processes.
  • Providing support and guidance to field teams on PUWER regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Travelling regularly across the region to undertake site-based assessment and verification activities.
You will need
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of PUWER legislation, associated regulations, Approved Codes of Practice, and relevant standards.
  • Experience supporting formal incident investigation processes.
  • Strong computer literacy, including EAM systems and Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Advanced problem-solving and root cause analysis capabilities.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Practical understanding of risk-based decision-making within a retail environment.
  • Significant technical and maintenance engineering experience.
  • Experience managing or assuring PUWER compliance within a large and complex organisation.
  • Strong influencing skills with the ability to engage effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Engineering qualification or time-served Level 2 qualification (preferred).
