Position Summary: The Associate Director for Library Services and Legal Research Instructor reports to the Law Library Director and is responsible for supporting the students and faculty of the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law through library administrative operations and coordination of services and collections designed to advance legal research, scholarship, instruction, and learning.

Duties and Responsibilities

ADMINISTRATION

  • Serves as a member of Law Library’s Administrative Team to develop policies and procedures and advise the Director
  • Manages administrative operations in the Director’s absence if needed
  • Participates in long- and short-term strategic planning, facilities management, space planning, and technology initiatives
  • Creates, implements, and monitors quality law library programs and services
  • Coordinates policy development and implementation across circulation, reference, and interlibrary loan services
  • Builds and supports Law Library relations with the Law School, the University, Falvey Library, library consortia, and professional organizations
  • Participates in disaster planning and response
  • Oversees and coordinates annual statistical reporting as required
  • Supervises librarians and staff, ensuring that Law Library services are delivered in an efficient, accurate, and professional manner
  • Manages projects as assigned

LIBRARY SERVICE

  • Coordinates Law Library reference services
  • Provides research consultations to students, faculty, staff, and visitors via in-person meetings, email, and phone
  • Coordinates the legal research instruction program, including curriculum development; assigns teaching responsibilities to librarians; and manages the program’s relationship with the Legal Writing Department, the Professional Development program, and the Externship program
  • Coordinates and administers library services to faculty (including Grad Tax and adjuncts) provided by the librarians and staff; supports faculty teaching and scholarship through participating in and administering the faculty liaison program; conducts research for faculty
  • Manages the Law Library’s copyright permissions services for faculty; reviews Worby Wall submissions and consults with student organizations for copyright compliance in conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, who gives final approval
  • Serves actively in Law Library and Law School committees as well as professional organizations at national, regional, section, and local levels in order to contribute to the profession, grow professionally, and stay abreast of current law library trends
  • Collaborates with Falvey Library to enhance Law Library services and collections
  • Participates in the Law School Professional Development program by serving as an academic advisor to assigned law students

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

  • Participates actively in developing and maintaining the content of the Law Library’s collection through regular review of electronic and print resources, including, but not limited to, GreenSlips
  • Works closely with the Associate Director for Collection Management to coordinate Law Library acquisitions and provide access to materials
  • Works closely with Falvey Library to arrange shared acquisitions

INSTRUCTION

  • Designs, prepares, and teaches a maximum of two courses in the law school curriculum per academic year: either two sections in the first-year legal research program or two sections of an advanced legal research class. Conducts student assessment.
  • Guest lectures in advanced legal research classes, clinics, and other law school courses, as well as the Professional Development and Externship programs
  • Supports faculty instruction through creation of targeted research guides, course material suggestions, and sharing of assessment tools and resources customized to the faculty member’s course content and structure
  • Serves as an academic advisor to assigned law students

Minimum Qualifications

Formal Education
  • J.D. from an ABA accredited institution and an M.L.I.S. from an ALA accredited institution
Minimum Work Experience
  • Five years’ experience as a professional academic law librarian with supervisory experience in library access services, reference services, faculty services, and legal research instruction.
Job Specific Knowledge
  • Knowledge of all aspects of librarianship and library management, professional development and library trends.
  • Knowledge of electronic and print legal resources, including government documents.
  • Knowledge of legal research processes and strategies and their role in the practice of law.
  • Knowledge of legal education and pedagogy.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to interact and work productively with a variety of people.
  • Strong diagnostic skills, problem solving skills, and project management skills.
  • Ability to create a supportive, productive, effective, and efficient work environment. A commitment to diversity and inclusion.
