What We Are Looking For

The CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE) is looking for accomplished researchers to join our team.

We encourage applications from international scholars working on climate change and environmental issues.

We encourage applications from scientists or senior scientists with experience in quantitative methods in environmental and economic disciplines. The candidates will join an international and interdisciplinary team either in Milan or Venice, Italy, to strengthen research in our core topics and promote new research lines addressing environmental and climate change issues that matter to society.

Responsibilities

We are looking for researchers to strengthen the research capacity of our institute. Main topics include:

  • Economic and social repercussions of the clean energy transition
  • Material and resource requirements of climate transition strategies
  • Physical and socio-economic assessment of climate impacts and adaptation strategies
  • Modeling of biodiversity and socio-economic interactions
  • Integrated land-water-energy sustainable strategies
  • Impacts and solutions of regional and local pollution
  • Robust decision making to design adaptation strategies

To contribute to these topics, researchers will integrate their skills with the Institute's analytical capacity. We have established computational models of economic, environmental, and climate systems, promoting a plurality of methodological and disciplinary approaches. We also have consolidated statistical, econometrics, and growingly machine learning capabilities.

We expect mid-career researchers to contribute to these research topics, advance our assessment methods, and proactively contribute to the Institute's fundraising effort. Researchers will work on internally and externally funded research projects, helping coordinate scientific activities and supervising post-docs and PhD students.

Requirements

We are looking for two or more motivated researchers with one of the following skills:

  • Computational modelling using economic frameworks, such as GAMS, Julia, or JuMP
  • Multiscale land-water-energy modeling
  • Clean energy systems and markets
  • Geo-spatial statistics and econometrics of climate and environmental hazards
  • Biodiversity modeling and valuation
  • Ex-post/ex-ante evaluation of climate and environmental policies
  • Robust optimization and decision analysis under deep uncertainty

Depending on the profile, we expect candidates to have the following qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience since PhD in economics, applied mathematics, engineering, physics, or any related fields
  • Fluency in English (Italian not required), good presentation and writing skills
  • Willingness to travel to project meetings and conferences
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse environment committed to high-quality research
  • Experience in research project writing and management

Duration, Compensation & Benefits

  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The successful candidates will be based in Milan or Venice, Italy, CMCC offices
  • The appointment period will initially be 24 months and renewable pending a positive evaluation. Tenure can be considered depending on previous seniority
  • The gross salary will be based on qualification and working experience and competitive with major research centres in Europe
  • Researchers of any nationality who have spent two or more years abroad are eligible for generous tax break incentives
  • Welfare benefits are included
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.

Some fiscal benefits could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).
