Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain virtual and storage infrastructure including VMs, storage volumes, SAN zoning, networks, and performance monitoring.
• Manage VMware/storage licenses, contracts, and vendor relationships.
• Ensure security by patching and threat monitoring across compute/storage layers.
• Document environment design, configuration, SOPs, runbooks, and troubleshooting procedures.
• Troubleshoot complex issues across VMware and SAN environments and coordinate with other teams.
• Collaborate with networking, resiliency, identity, and security teams for integration.
• Apply patches and firmware updates to keep systems secure.
• Monitor performance/capacity to pre-empt issues impacting operations.
• Optimize for performance and efficiency; support disaster recovery planning/tests (VMware SRM).
• Provide training and knowledge transfer to other admins.
• Lead SAN/storage lifecycle activities across Dell PowerFlex, Pure Storage, and fiber fabrics.
• Own KPI tracking for VMware and SAN domains; report to leadership.
• Represent team during incidents; drive RCAs and post-mortems.
• Adhere to change management processes to minimize disruptions.

Job description

Designing and implementing VMware and SAN/storage solutions involving planning and deploying VMware technologies (vSphere, SRM, vSAN, NSX, vRealize Suite) and enterprise SAN/storage platforms (Dell PowerFlex, Pure Storage, Brocade/Cisco fiber switches), ensuring they align with business needs, resiliency objectives, and security best practices. This role supports SHI's Enterprise Compute Resiliency Engineering team across global data centres, driving disaster recovery, modernization, and lifecycle management initiatives in partnership with Network, OS, Resiliency, Identity, and strategic vendors (Dell, Pure Storage, Broadcom, Cohesity).

Responsibilities:

Include but not limited to

• Managing and maintaining virtual and storage infrastructure including tasks like creating and managing virtual machines, storage volumes, SAN zoning, and networks, as well as monitoring performance and capacity
• Managing and maintaining VMware and storage licenses, support contracts, and vendor relationships (Dell, Pure Storage, Broadcom, Cohesity)
• Ensuring the environment is secure by implementing security best practices, patching systems, and monitoring security threats across compute and storage layers
• Developing and maintaining documentation by documenting the environment's design, configuration, SOPs, runbooks, and troubleshooting procedures (Confluence-ready, audit-ready)
• Troubleshooting complex technical issues by diagnosing and resolving problems related to the VMware and SAN environment, often working with other teams to ensure timely resolution
• Collaborating with other IT teams like networking, storage, resiliency, identity, and security to ensure the VMware and SAN environment integrates smoothly with other systems
• Maintenance - applying patches, firmware, and updates to VMware and storage platforms to keep the environment secure and up to date
• Monitoring system performance and capacity to help identify potential issues before they impact business operations
• Optimizing the environment for performance and efficiency to ensure the environment is running as smoothly and efficiently as possible
• Participating in disaster recovery planning, design, and testing (VMware SRM, secured snapshots, replication validation) to ensure the business can recover from a major outage or cyber event
• Providing support to other system administrators involving assisting with troubleshooting, training, and knowledge transfer
• Leading SAN/storage lifecycle activities including provisioning, replication, firmware upgrades, zoning, and decommissioning across Dell PowerFlex, Pure Storage, and fiber channel fabrics
• Owning KPI tracking and reporting for VMware and SAN domains (hypervisor uptime, SAN latency, replication health, firmware currency) for leadership reporting
• Representing the team during major incidents, leading RCAs, driving to resolution, and producing executive-ready post-mortems
• Ensure that all work and changes are performed according to the defined change management process to minimize disruption to business
• Evaluate new technology options and vendor products for quick onboarding of automation and modernization

Skills and Experience:

• MA/MS or equivalent +10 years of experience (BA/BS + 13 yrs or AA/AS + 15 yrs)
• Extensive experience with VMware technologies including vSphere, SRM, vSAN, NSX, and other related products
• Extensive experience with different types of hardware including Dell, HPE, Cisco UCS, blade servers, Synergy, and C7000 chassis
• Strong understanding of virtualization concepts including virtual machines, virtual networks, and virtual storage
• Extensive experience with enterprise SAN/storage platforms including Dell PowerFlex, Pure Storage (Flash Array/Flash Blade), Brocade/Cisco fiber switches - provisioning, zoning, replication, firmware lifecycle
• Strong understanding of DR/resiliency concepts (RPO/RTO, replication, secured/immutable snapshots) and backup platforms (Cohesity, NetBackup, Veeam, or equivalent)
• Experience with scripting and automation to help with automating routine tasks and managing the environment efficiently using PowerCLI Studio, Ansible, Terraform, APIs, and other scripting tools
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for resolving complex issues across the VMware and SAN environment
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with other teams, vendors, and provide support to users; ability to explain technical concepts in laymen's terms to executive audiences
• Experience with ITIL processes and best practices to ensure the VMware and SAN environment is managed effectively
• Experience working in change-managed, audit-ready environments (ServiceNow, CAB processes, PCI/SOX awareness)
• Self-motivated initiative-taker with seasoned judgment, strong sense of ownership, and ability to drive solutions without waiting for direction
• Available for after-hours/weekend maintenance windows for migrations, upgrades, and DR events
