Job description

We are looking for an experienced US Payroll Specialist for our client an Atlanta-based voluntary benefits company offering an industry-leading employee purchase program.The ideal candidate should have strong knowledge of US payroll processes, multi-state payroll taxation, tax compliance and payroll terminology, with the ability to independently manage payroll activities across different US states.

About the Role

The US Payroll Specialist will manage and process US payroll accurately and within defined payroll timelines, handle payroll processing across multiple US states, ensure compliance with applicable tax regulations, and support employees and internal teams with payroll-related matters.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and process US payroll accurately and within defined payroll timelines.
  • Handle payroll processing across multiple US states, ensuring compliance with applicable state and local tax regulations.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll taxes and applicable tax requirements.
  • Calculate and validate earnings, deductions, benefits, overtime, bonuses, reimbursements, and tax withholdings.
  • Review payroll inputs and outputs, identify discrepancies, and ensure timely resolution.
  • Handle payroll tax-related activities, including tax withholding, filings, reporting, and reconciliations.
  • Stay updated on changes to US federal and state payroll tax laws and regulations.
  • Work closely with HR, Finance, Benefits, and other internal teams to resolve payroll-related queries.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and support internal/external payroll audits.
  • Handle employee queries related to payroll, tax deductions, W-2s, withholding, and other payroll matters.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands-on US payroll experience.
Required Skills
  • 5+ years of hands-on US payroll experience.
  • Strong understanding of US federal, state, and local payroll taxes.
  • Good knowledge of multi-state payroll processing and state-specific tax requirements.
  • Strong understanding of US payroll terminology, including W-2, W-4, 941, FUTA, SUTA/SUI, FICA, Medicare, Social Security, federal/state withholding, etc.
  • Experience handling payroll calculations, deductions, tax withholdings, reconciliations, and payroll adjustments.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with sensitive payroll information.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with Workday Payroll.
  • Exposure to other payroll platforms such as ADP, UKG, Paychex, Ceridian/Dayforce, or similar.
  • Experience handling payroll for employees across a large number of US states.
  • Knowledge of payroll compliance, audits, and year-end activities.
  • Strong Excel skills, including VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, and data reconciliation.
